View Full Version : Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 -another one ^^;

it seems I'm not the only one having trouble with this nasty one. I've managed to get rid of a whole lot of pop ups, 'Virusbusters' and a couple other programs that seemed to have had installed themselves without my permission. Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 persists and continues to be detected by spybot despite attempts to remove it. It seems to be constantly trying to connect to the internet, and if the internet is left on and I walk away, I return to a whole bunch of popups, viruses, etc. once again. x_x

-sorry, couldn't get any of those online scanners to work as I don't have Java and don't really want to use IE

here's the log from HJT:

also, spybot tells me these extra instructions:
'You will need to use the process explorer: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
There you need to right click on "Winlogon.exe" and choose "properties..."
Then you will have to go to the "Threads" tab, there you will see the dll with the randomized filename, it is the same name as in the Spybot scanresult.
Choose and kill the dll, it is running 2 times. After that you will need to reboot to have Spybot remove the dll from the System.'

I followed these instructions until I got to the "Threads" tab, but wasn't sure at all what dll to kill, and didn't want to kill the wrong thing. ('awvvt.dll' and 'awtqomj.dll' seemed the most sus of them all, but *shrug*)

Hi Pita_Magic ad welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

You got some infections...

Rename HijackThis.exe to Scanner.exe

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis (scanner.exe) log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hi again :)

Before we'll continue I would like you to do something for me...
I need you too upload few malware files for further inspection.

Make your hidden files visible:
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.
Please go here (http://www.uploadmalware.com/) to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
Enter your username from this forum
Copy and paste the link to this thread
Click "Browse" on the 1. field.
Browse to the following file and click the file with your mouse, press "Open"
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvt.dll
Click "Browse" on the 2. field.
Browse to the following file and click the file with your mouse, press "Open"
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqomj.dll

In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
Click on Send File
Please let me know when you have done this and then we'll get you cleaned :bigthumb:

I've uploaded the first file, but awtqomj.dll no longer seems to be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\

I did a search for it but it no longer seems to exist.

-Thanks again for taking the time to help me out!

Ok thanks for the upload :)

Now we'll continue....

Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
Save it to your desktop.
Start
Run
Copy the following to the box: "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /v awtqomj awvvt and hit enter.
Follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Ok good :)

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

NOTE: Do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until I tell you to do so!

Ok looking good :)
The computer is running fine ?

You don't seem to a firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) running, you must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection.
Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)
Then the first priority is to visit Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and get your system updated
-> At first, install Win XP Service Pack 2 Update
-> Reboot and get back to the Windows Update
-> Install all remaining important updates
(NOTE: You'll propably have to reboot and get back to the update several times before all of them are installed)

Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
Open AVG Anti-Spyware
Click Infections
Click Quarantine tab
Click Select all
Click Remove finally
Close the program
You can remove the tools we used.

Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Check "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

=============

Now that you seem to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clear your system restore (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx)
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.

Use ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.

Use Ad-Aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use Spybot S&D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Use Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org)
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.

Keep your systen up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Visit Windows Update regularly.

Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.

Read this article by TonyKlein (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stand Up and Be Counted ! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)
