I did the online scan and it found and fixed but did not save a file. I used Trend Micro ONline scan and interestingly it said that Mcafee did the fix.

You help will be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, help me out here, exactly what problems are you having? Post that information and I need you to do this.

1) Move HJT from the TEMP folder to a permanent one, I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instructions use these:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html

2) Start > Run > type "msconfig" without the quotes and OK. When System Configuration Utility opens, chose Normal Start up then Apply and OK your way out. You may return to Selective Start up to save your resources when we finish.

3) Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

(if you have Smitfraudfix on your computer, delete it, I need to see a scan from the newest version)

4) There are three 015 items in this HJT log, that is your Trusted Zone. Did you place those items there.

Restart your computer and post the "Search" results from Smitfraudfix, a new HJT log and any other information I requested.

Thanks

djackh

Problems: I got some sort of redirection of my home page to iesafetwarning.com ; addition of an icon on my desktop that is called: Oneline Security Guard; and an icon in the bottom tool bar that keeps warning me of "Ciritcal Systems Errors" and keeps popping up.

1. Yesterday I set up the HJT to a permanent folder and I will copy at the end of the message. I did not run a new one since I could not do the Smitfraudfix. see below

2. I could not do the smitfraudfix because it said that the process.exe was missing and would have me hit the enter key and nothing happened.

3. I see the three 015 items in my HJT log; I know that I placed at least two of those there: Chicago Title, and one other the LexisNexis. I don't know about the other, but I think it might be related to Chicago title also.

Thanks for your help. I don't know what to do about that smitfraudfix thing.

Here is HJT log from the permanent file from yesterday.

Please read the Note : process.exe in the instructions. Your McAfee program is probably blocking the Process.exe which IS NOT a virus and necessary to clean the infection.
Here is a tutorial of the fix:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

Delete what you downloaded, turn off your McAfee and download SmitfraudFix. Turn your Antivirus program back on, and check to make sure all files are in place when you open the folder. Please understand this fix will not work without that file (Process.exe)

Here is a link where you can see the files that must be there when you open Smitfruadfix. They are thumbnails, click to make them larger.

Thanks for returning the information and the feedback.
See these instructions:

2) Start > Run > type "msconfig" without the quotes and OK. When System Configuration Utility opens, chose Normal Start up then Apply and OK your way out. You may return to Selective Start up to save your resources when we finish. Both logs you posted are with MSConfig in Selective Startup mode. You must follow those infstructions before you post the next HJT log.

I am going to suggest you use the Optional part of the fix to clean the "Trusted Zone" to be sure, and then put back what you wish, proceed like this:

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Restart the computer and post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix "Clean" function and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

Houston, we have a problem. All seemed to go well until I robooted, and then I don't get any english subtitles on my desktop and cannot connect to the internet -- they are just boxes and circles and objects instead of words. I think they call those binary language perhaps. I am able to type in my password when my windows user 'name' just boxes and circles and things shows up and that seems to allow the desktop to come up. I also notice the icons are smaller than usual.

Now I say it all seemed to go fine, but that is not really correct, because when I got to the fix and chose number 2, a window for mcafee came up and I followed those instructions. Then after that, the window came up that I was to chose yes. I am somewhat of a loss because I had to go to a friends to email you here.

So I don't know what to do. I am thinking that maybe I could get my laptop from work and figure out how to restore to yesterday or something if I had a pattern to know what to put in.

Thanks for some more help.

Not really sure at this point, unless it had to do with what you did with McAfee? I have yet to see a log with everything enabled in MSConfig so I am not sure if there could be something on the computer causing it? That is why I asked for the last log to have everything enabled in System Configuation Utility. I would suggest you try a couple of reboots? If you get it back to normal, then turn off McAfee and run Smitfraudfix. You need to get the stuff that was located removed.
If you get any error messages from Windows, post them. Keep me posted on your progess.

Thanks

Here are a couple of things to try for the Desktop.

1) 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Select Restore Defaults
__________________________________________________
2) Right-click on the desktop
Click on the Properties item
When the Properties dialog comes up click on the Web tab
If Show Web content on my Active Desktop is checked then click on the page in the box below and click the Delete button
Uncheck the checkbox in front of Show Web content on my Active Desktop
Click the Apply button and then the Ok button

Let me know if that helps

Yesterday morning I took my xp pro disk and tried a "repair" -- it solved the funny symbols which had taken the place of the letters, but left me with inability to access the internet, my printer, or LAN. So I hired my company's IT dude and he spent two hours fixing some corrupted files including http.sys and I lost track. Anyways, a few tweeks this morning to add my special font, and reset the printer settings, and I am back running about 100%. Don't know if your last post would have helped or not, but appreciate the effort.

I ran the smithfraud thing and here is the latest log. Looks like all that junk is off now. Still have to restore my trusted sites, but maybe tomorrow !!
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for getting back to me, and sorry about your problems. To my knowledge the tools we used would not have caused this, Smitfraudfix is being used all of the world just now.

Here is a tool that may help if you lose connectivitity again:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Here is information about System File Checker that may be able to restore your corrupt or missing Windows files:
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
http://www.networkclue.com/os/Windows/commands/sfc.aspx

As far as I can see Smitfraudfix is finding nothing. I would still appreciate a look at a HJT log with everything enabled in MSConfig. How is the computer running now, any evidence of malware?

Thanks

Thanks. You know I don't think it was smitfixfraud that did it. I think I should have stopped when that mcafee popped up -- in any event the computer seems to be running fine now.

Here is a new log hope it is the one you want.

In the first HJT log you did not appear to be running two antivirus programs, please see this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
My suggestion would be to uninstall one of those antivirus programs.

I posted instructions in the first post, see them quoted below. I understand you had some trauma, but HJT is just not safe in a temp folder, please follow the instruction.

1) Move HJT from the TEMP folder to a permanent one, I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instructions use these:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html

My scanners are showing this item as bad: M:\msgs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Abacus msgs] "M:\msgs.exe" /"M:\"

Can you assure me this item is safe:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\HPMProp.bin

You you do not know the two items above, use use one or more of these free online scan to find out and post the information for me.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Follow the above instructions, post the information I requested and a new HJT log.

Thanks

1. I have set up a new file c:\HJT in which I opened the exe file and then I saved the log and have copied it here now. Maybe I am doing it wrong, but i unziped the file and saved it this time in the c:\HJT folder, then ran it, and saved the log in C:\HJT folder. I have now copied that log and inserted in this at the end.
2. My mcafee expired but I have an update that I have not installed yet so my IT guy put this freebee on; I will take it off tomorrow.
3. Both those files were "ok" using the first on line scanner.
4. HJT log:

If you can't use McAfee, you would probably be safer turning McAfee off until you can update it and uninstall AVG. That is basically what Symantec and Mircrosoft are saying in the links I posted earlier.

The only item I see in the HJT log are resources wasters related to the Alexa toolbar. If you don't use Alexa, I would remove them.
http://www.imilly.com/alexa.htm <<< information

If you wish them removed, let's do this:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
(next one does not identify, if you are sure it is safe, you may leave it)
O16 - DPF: {0BE0E0B4-3E03-4EB6-99B2-00948505A067} (Media Client ActiveX Installer) - http://www.downloadcoach.com/MCInstaller.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Here is a free tool you can download to clean for you:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925

OR you can also use Windows Cleanmgr like this:
Start > Run > type "cleanmgr" without the quote, then OK. Allow it to run and I suggest you remove what Windows finds.

I believe it would be a good idea to clean your System Restore foles, use these instructions:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Safe surfing and a Merry Christmas:present:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
