A friend's business 'puter has been behaving weird for quite some time. It finally misbehaved again in front of me. I opened a folder called jokes and it freezes. It wont even pull up the Task Manager. The incident is repeatable or at least a few times is as many as I have tried. I shredded that folder.
Then it was really bad again for me when CTFmon and Google toolbar keep trying put themselves on the start up list. I uninstalled the toolbar, deleted any 'google' entry found in the toolbar and shredded any file in Program Files. Everything I can use to check for the Google toolbar on the start up menu I turn off. I fired up AdAware and turned the GT off and let Adware be resident. A few minutes later, as predicted, Spybot Tea Timer is trying to stop the toolbar from repopulating the registry. I click 'deny' and it does the same thing, even with the DSL disconnected. So I click 'remember this decision' and deny and it and spybot get into a war and I can't even shut down. Oh, this time Adaware ot into it so while I am trying to adjust the icon size, Spybot, AdAware, and the Google toolbar are flashing each other until I finally pull the plug!
CTFMon is in there doing its things as well, just it reads itself incognito. I think I have solved this one before.
Running Pro SP2... Oh, Have tried stopping it with Defender as well. Tried lots of stuff. Spybot will not update nor will Microsoft. OneSCan was put into an infinite loop. I have tried a lot and had mixed results. Also, something is wrong with his BIOS and the drivers are not found, usually the CDs will NOT boot up but I monkey to where they will come up sometimes. I don't want to get it mad at me though...
What do you think real issue or not?
Oh, I brought AutoPatcher over a month ago to attempt resolutoin of this and looked at it today and swear the top half of Critical Updates is missing. Will have to recheck. Ya and the clean up uninstalls wont work. Is AutoPatcher reliable? Noticed other things, but ignore because these things make me itchy!!!!!
Was going to bring over IE7, fresh Spybot and AutoPatch in the am, but may have him wait until I hear from ya'll, but it is his jewelry store PC and we need to email xmas letters and wah wah wah,,, I can wait and just let it behave and not irritate the thing. THZX U THZX U THZX U SOOO MUCH!!!!!

Just removing the startup entry for ctfmon.exe most likely will not prevent it from starting unless you take other actions. See:
Frequently asked questions about Ctfmon.exe

In regard to the Google toolbar entry it would be helpful if you showed the registry change you are dealing with:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident > page (scroll) to the bottom of the listing and highlight a portion of the log that shows the Google toolbar change(s), then right click and select Copy. Paste (Ctrl+V) the log entries to another post in this thread.
