Getting random popups

Hi - For about a week now, I've been getting various popups when exploring (namely, porn, dating, a plain blue screen and 'you're computer is infected' tpye ones... Spybot: S&D, Adaware SE Personal and my antivirus (F-Secure) are not finding anything. All are up to date.

Help appreciated!

1) "BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps

Review the instructions in the above link, make sure you have completed them all. Choose one of those free online virus scans and post the results.

2) Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

1) Went for the etrust scan (Trend Micro got about halfway and the browser closed itself).

Scan Results: Scan Completed. 26083 files scanned. No viruses found.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. There is just nothing showing beside a out of date Java program. I would update it, if you need instructions for doing it let me know. See this information:

If you are still have the symptoms, please try to give me more information. Where are the popups directing you. Let rename HJT to see if we have a hidden Vundo infection.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\HJT\HJT.exe <<< return to here and right click the mouse and choose rename. Call it mstokesy84.exe or whatever you wish. If anything is hidden it should show after a reboot in the next HJT log.

Let's run a good spyware program, this is a free trial, follow the directions in the link. Make sure you choose to delete or at least quarantine what it locates. Save that scan report so I can see it.

Any other info: I have just noticed on Spybot - in the recovery section, that Smitfraud-C. Toolbar888 was removed on the 13th Dec, which may have conincided with the date I started getting the popups, but it never had it show up again in later scans.
Can't think of anything else although I reckon that could be an important find!?

Well, we may have a new one here, and it may be hard to remove. I saw something about this and would like to let you read it, unfortunately it in an area of a forum only the helpers can see. Here is a bit of the information:

Users complain of ameana, winantivirus and drivecleaner.
No Signs of smitfraud, Vundo or L2M
Boot to safe mode and get a HijackThis log, it will show an O4 similar to:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ohvjefwcu] c:\windows\system32\ohvjefwcu.exe ohvjefwcu
Note: Filename is random but will appear three times in the one O4
(if this shows up I will post the rest of the information)

I have never removed this one before so we will both be learning as we go.

First let's completely rule out a Vundo infection like this:

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

If Vundofix finds any files, make sure you run the fix until you are seeing "all files deleted" for all items located. Then post the Vundofix log and a new HJT log.

Blacklight will produce a textfile on the Desktop near the .exe. Copy and past the the information in that notepad to this topic. Please do not do anything else with the information until I give you instructions.

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Now use this tutorial and run Blacklight to clean out the rootkit files. You will be renaming them, read the instructions carefully first so you will know what you are doing.

Post the results of that Blacklight scan.

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now run HJT again in Safe mode and post the log. Once you post that HJT log, then follow these instructions:


* Click here (http://beta.grisoft.cz/beta/betarep.files/antirootkit/AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe) to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on the AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe file to run it.
Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
By default it will install to "G:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta".
Click "Next" to begin the installation then click "Install".
It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
Click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.
After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
Click on the "Perform in-depth search" button to begin the scan.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save result to file" button.
Save the scan results to your desktop then come back here to copy and paste the results in your next reply to this thread.

Post those scan results and let me know how the computer is running.

AVG Anti Root Kit didnt find anything so no log was saved.

And so far so good in that no popups have come up - x-fingers!!!

Great job with those instructions, I think we killed it. Let's give it a couple of days.

Clean out System Restore:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

You can delete all of the tools you downloaded, you may wish to keep ATF-Cleaner, here is a tutorial:
