Dear Forum Members
First let me wish you all a merry Xmas and a happy new year.
I have since yesterday been seeing the activities of a spyware. It appears in the form of repeated alert nitices from the start tray with a balloon saying " system detected virus activities....." or "
system alert networm-i@fp". Once I press on this balloon, I'm taken to the site hxxp://www.anti-vermins.com/?aff=321
I tried to see if others had this problem discussed here. Some other member talked about repeated popups, but I donno if his problem is like mine.
It seems that many people are suffering from this problem. I saw many cals for help regarding this particular problem in many forums.
Can you plz direct me to how ovecome this malware?

I have run:
1. Spybot in the safe mood, and I found nothing to fix.
2. Ad-Aware in the safe mood and found nothing.
3. AVG anti-spyware and found nothing.
4. CCleaner and did the cleaning.

I'm still having the annoying alert notice. It appears even when I'm offline and even in the safe mood. It is a balloon that appears from the start tray from the system icon just close to the clock. The system icon now has a red question mark alternating with a blue circle with a question mark. I get the alert balloon every one or two minutes.

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!Ri)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Regarding your note about process.exe, I have followed the link you provided but I did not understand much of what the page said. I do not have a basic knowledge about how the windows software works. Is there any specific action regarding process.exe that you recommend that I take?

The process.exe file has the ability to stop processess so it might get flagged as a baddie. So don't worry.
You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.
Download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
Do NOT run yet.
Make your hidden files visible:
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Reboot in Normal Mode.
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Now a day has passed after the disappearance of the annoying alert and I still do not see it. Thats good.
I keep the keyloggers on purpose, I use then when I use my laptop outside home.

You don't seem to a firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) running, you must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection.
Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
Open AVG Anti-Spyware
Click Infections
Click Quarantine tab
Click Select all
Click Remove finally
Close the program
You can remove the tools we used.
Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Check "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.
