Howdy, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Our PC is slow, AOL updates are failing and several times per hour we're receiving the warning message pictured below. Clicking yes will deliver us to ameana.com. If typing when it appears it delivers us to some win anti virus something or other.

Welcome to the forum, if you have not resolved these issues elsewhere, let's start like this.
Looks to me like you are running Pest Patrol (CA) and McAfee at the same time, see this information:
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
If this is the case, uninstall one of those.

SpywareBot <<< this is a rouge program, see this information: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

1) Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

2) Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

3) Please download FixWareout from here:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

(hold those reports until we finish)

4) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

6) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall AviCodecEX, SpywareBot and any other program you know does not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Howdy pskelley!
Nice ta meetcha, thanx fer yer help. No, our issues had not been resolved elsewhere therefore we proceeded exactly per your instructions and are 100% dedicated to seeing this through with your help.
Prior to discovering you kids and this web site and forums we had been flitting around the web like the crazed idiot that I can be, in a major panic desperately searching for a way to fix the 'puter. We totally got sucked in by SPYWAREBOT. They reminded me of door to door salesman, they placed the bait and then threw the "switch" and got our money. We also tried a number of other free aids we found and left all of it on the machine, so many different ones I lost track and probably could not recount them now.

Re: your instructions,
You wrote:
Looks to me like you are running Pest Patrol (CA) and McAfee at the same time, see this information:
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...00031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...120300087.html
If this is the case, uninstall one of those.

My action:
We use America Online and the full security suite, hence the McAfee. I'm sure I got the Pest Patrol this month during my frenzied quest for aid. At any rate we decided to remove Pest Patrol. I used control panel/remove programs but it wasn't on the list. I believe I may have partially attempted to uninstall it prior to receiving your help. I then ran a search of all files on my computer which produced one instance of Pest Patrol (CA). I used the pop up menu and selected uninstall and executed it. Then I rebooted and did it all again because it never told me anything when it was finished, like, successfully removed or anything like that so I wanted to be sure I did it. After that I searched it up same way one more time and this time I deleted it with the pop up menu command. Then I deleted temp files, defragmented and ran disk cleanup and rebooted and when I searched it up one more time it was completely gone, not to be found at all.
I then followed steps one through nine explicitly and everything appeared to cooperate successfully. For step six the two items you mentioned by name did not appear in the remove programs list generated by my PC, once again I'm guessing probably because I had already tried to uninstall them prior to your help.
Already, there has been a MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT in the speed of this machine and it's ability to execute commands. I really can't imagine or wait until we're finished to see how it could even better than it is now. The improvement has been so great that I really don't even recognize this as my computer, it's like I got a new one for Christmas! Thanxalot for your help. Here then are the reports you requested next.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's proceed like this:

1) Smitfraudfix

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php
Follow these instructions:
Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

2) Blacklight

The Blacklight scan has located a hidden rootkit, looks like this:
12/26/06 01:28:57 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINNT\system32\kdmsi.exe
I would like you to read these instructions so you will know what you are doing. Then run Blacklight again, use Step two and clean that infected item as shown. Be careful!!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial124.html

3) Follow the instructions in this link:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

4) Update McAfee and run a complete system scan. Remove anything it locates and post for me anything it found and could not delete or at least quarantine.

Restart the computer and post the results of the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the AVG Anti-Spyware scan, the results of the McAfee scan and any other information you think will help. How is the computer running?

Your Java progam is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Download the newest version and uninstall all old version in Add Remove programs.

Thanks

TonkaMike

Howdy!
I do believe we're KICKIN' THIS THINGS BOOTY!
Machine speed has increased again, drastically! Start up and shut down and reboot total times have decreased! I plan to follow recommendations for locking down explorer after we're completely finished here. Until I do that I'm now AFRAID to surf the web without proper protection, therefore I would report more later as to how the computer is running after using it like I normally would be for business, on eBay and the rest of the internet.
Instructions followed explicitly and full cooperation and success appears to have been realized once again.
1) We ran the Smitfraudfix in SAFE MODE in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection. The wininet.dll was not infected.
REBOOT
2) We read the instructions and then ran Blacklight again, using Step two, to clean the infected item as shown. However, the infected item was NO LONGER PRESENT! I panicked slightly since this was the first time that everything didn't proceed exactly as you had outlined. So, I RAN IT AGAIN and once again it did NOT FIND any infected items! So we proceeded as planned...?
3) We downloaded and installed AVG Anti-Spyware (ewido). Point of interest here, following instructions, we were UNABLE to update this software prior to use. We researched and learned that this may be common for their server and as we had no choice but to proceed we followed the rest of the instructions for AVG setup and ran the scan anyway. Just now today, prior to writing this reply, we attempted the update again and IT WAS SUCCESSFUL!
4) We updated McAfee and ran a complete(full) system scan. We use the default settings for now and LO and BEHOLD, look who showed up and promptly GOT DELETED! Your friend and mine, kdmsi.exe!!! This one item alone, classifed as a virus by McAfee, was deleted, nothing else was found by the scan. I couldn't find a way to get a report or log copied from the scan so I wrote down what I could see. AOL's Security Center Scan results page showed: Name: kdmsi.exe Status: File Deleted Scan Info: Puper
REBOOT

I don't want to get ahead of myself, nor you especially, but hopefully we're near the end? I will await your reply and when advised it's safe would like to proceed with several more actions such as locking down explorer, replacing JAVA, getting advice on possibly activating some additional spyware/malware protections and would like a recommendation for an average donation amount.
Here then are the reports you requested next.

Seems that item: kdmsi.exe is part of the rootkit associated with the Ukrainians, take a look:
http://whois.domaintools.com/85.255.113.115 I wish to be sure that infection is gone, and then I will post all closing information to give you a look at expert advice at staying clean. We also need to clean the System Restore files, no doubt they are infected. Let's close this thing out like this.

1) Run Fixwareout again, no need to post the results unless you have a question, if it comes up clean you can remove Fixwareout from your computer.

2) As a double check: * Click here to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.
http://beta.grisoft.cz/beta/betarep.files/antirootkit/AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe
Double-click on the AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe file to run it.
Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
By default it will install to "G:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta".
Click "Next" to begin the installation then click "Install".
It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
Click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.
After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
Click on the "Perform in-depth search" button to begin the scan.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save result to file" button.
Save the scan results to your desktop then come back here to copy and paste the results in your next reply to this thread. No need to post unless there is a problem or a question.

3) System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

4) If you get to here clean, then you can remove all of the tools we have used, you may want to keep ATF-Cleaner and here is a tutorial for it's use:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925

5) AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

6) Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

DUDE! DUDETTE?
It's ALL GOOD. Followed instructions explicitly. CLEAN all the way to the end! I'm tossing out the miscellaneous software and beginning all the reading of advice and recommendations, I'll replace the JAVA and will toss all the rest! What else can I say besides a sincere thank you very much. What is an average or fair donation amount? >>>TonkaMike><>:yahoo: :beerbeerb:  :2thumb: :band:

Good to hear our mutual efforts were successful. I am Phil from Plorida and particulars are in the public profile:

We are volunteers but I am sure it costs big $$$'s to run a website like this one and any donation will be appreciated.

Thanks...Phil
