Google redirecting to unknown/advertising sites

Hi,

This is for my next door neighbours computer. When opening Firefox/Internet Explorer, and using Google often when you click on a link (for example BBC news), the browser will redirect numerous times to different sites, before stopping on one (presumably when browser redirect ends?).

When loading up Google as a homepage, the bottom left of the page continues to go through waiting for www.google.co.uk and then connected to google.co.uk. It never actually reaches the page, and comes up with the error

Redirect Loop -
Redirection limit for this URL exceeded. Unable to load the requested page. This may be caused by cookies that are blocked.,

The couple had Norton installed, after installing Avast it found 6 virus'.

Spybot then found 35, which were all 'fixed'.

I'm coming to this forum as a last resort!

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...Fixwareout.exe

Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

(wait until you finish to port the reports and logs)

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post the report from Fixwareout, a new HJT log and some feedback from you. How is the computer running now.

It's still doing exactly what it was doing before.

Firefox is still coming up with the

Redirect Loop -

message on the homepage (www.google.co.uk)

When searching in google on firefox the same thing with the redirect to an advertising site is happening. IE seems to have stopped doing this.

I am going to see if uninstalling firefox, and doing a reinstall changes anything.

One thing I have now noticed is that the google results are all in italics (on FF) compared to being normal on IE.

I have updated Java.

I really appreciate your help with this. Have you any idea ow my neighbours (who barely use their computer) could have got this problem?

Often, out of date programs like Java. are exploited by hackers when a visit is made to a valid but infected website.
Looks like Fixwareout cleaned the bad item from the registry and successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.
It also reset your Hosts file, but this item is still in the HJT log?

One of the websites which keeps coming up is www.c opy-b ook.c o.uk

What could I try next?

Let me see if I have this straight, this is not happening in Internet Explorer, you UNINSTALLED the old version of Firefox and installed version 3.0.1 from the link I provided and the same issue is occuring.

If this is correct, then we will try this:
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

and ask Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) to take a look:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

It was the DNS server. It was using a different thing, presumably that was making the difference.

I flushed the DNS thing in CMD aftewards as well.

It all seems to be working, although I'll run a Kaspersky Online scan anyway.
