"antivirus software" malwar infection (tough one!)

Hello all, I am using vista service pack 2. Yesterday my wife called me at work and said the computer keeps poping up that we are infected and need to activate some antivirus software. Then it blocked all internet access, then it stoped allowing us to start any executables with the following message.

"Application cannot be executed. The file is infected. do you want to activate your antivirus now?"

Obviously I don't believe this message.

So my first question is how did I get this?


Now here is what I have done so far

I was able to get it to reboot into safe mode using msconfig. Then I ran spybot search and destroy and ran the imunization then scanned the system. It found some stuff and got rid of it. Then rebooted again into safe mode but this time with network enabled. When I tried to go to the web I get a proxy error message saying firefox cannot connect to the proxy server. I do not use a proxy server so I assumed this was relatd to the malware. I am assuming this is because when I immunized with spybot that server was blacklisted. So I went into the firefox setup and told it not to use the system proxy information and to use normal host. now I can get to the internet and download hijack this. So I have my hijack this log here and was hoping someone could help me out and tell me what entries need to be fixed I have no idea how to read this log. Thank you! The log is below. Hello donjonson,

So that everyone is on the same track please see this forum's FAQ which also includes instructions on posting a preliminary DDS log: "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance)

Then start a new topic, copy paste the DDS log into it and a volunteer analyst will advise you when available. :)
