when renaming a value, its type gets changed to REG_NONE. Furthermore, the "change type" option is disabled, so I can't change it back.

Good to read that. A full-blown Registry-Editor with the ability to handle names with embedded nulls, that would really be something.

How about 00s in key and value names? These can only be handled by using the low-level Nt... functions. See Sysinternals article about RegDelNull for more information.
The edit fields in the DWORD-Editor use Shift-Ins for Paste, Ctrl-Ins for Copy and Ctrl-Del for cut. This is way outdated. Windows Standard says that Ctrl-V, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-X are recommended though...
