In my opinion, for what little it is worth, eliminating all the extra 'features' would eliminate a lot of the problems.
Just make a stand-alone malware scanner and be done with it.
I believe...
Before I download it, is there a 'lite' version?
I do not need all the 'bells and whistles', just a decent on-demand malware scanner that does not install a lot of extraneous 'features' I will...
A Metro UI would definitely make me never use SBS&D ever again.
Metro UI on Windows 8 is the main reason I would never buy it, regardless of other 'improvements'.
Malwarebytes?
@PepiMK,
Thank you for personally replying.
I assure you, the Immunization does not check for duplicates, it simply adds its own entries into my hosts file, effectively doubling the size.
...
Seems about the same to me.
I will continue to advocate for a 'lite' version that does not have all the extraneous modules.
I would also ask that the "Immunize" function check for duplicate...
I realize it is none of my business, and at the risk of falling into disfavor with the moderators and staff, I am going to agree with firefox007 in the regard that I also believe that 2.0 (if it...
@cowby22,
I started to read your post, but without punctuation and paragraphs, I quit after two lines.
Have you tried re-downloading the .iso file, it may be corrupt?
Or, in Windows 7; right click the .iso and select Burn Disc Image.
A Restore point before Spybot was installed?
Makes sense.
@imageek,
I did not notice it either, until to you mentioned it.
But it just appeared at the top of the post list today.
Weird, the forum is now practicing thread necromancy?
No edit function for my previous post?
Anyway, I looked up the Halloween Edition.
Version 1.5.1.17 from 2007, correct?
Halloween Edition?
I completely agree.
However, everyone should realize that this is a BETA.
Perhaps the developers will institute that feature in future versions.
For now, setting the service to Disabled in...
Windows Services, set it to disabled.
It is not that difficult.
You set it to disabled in Windows Services?
I am seeing much less usage.
Snip right after boot:

Uncheck the Read Only attribute in Properties?
Thank you, and I believe I never implied that you did.
However, I am hoping other users will provide input regarding their experiences with the Rootkit Scanner.
I have no reluctance trying BETA software, but when I find it is not operating properly it is quickly uninstalled (as is the case here).
So, you do not have this issue?
If it is specific only to my rig, I do not believe that will be worth the many, many hours it would take to complete, and I will simply forego the use of SBS&D.

OK, but Kaspersky and GMER find nothing.
I noticed the entries appeared to all be in User folders, in the Application Data/*/*/*/*/*... subfolders. (where * is Application Data again), this...
As it appears no-one is following the suggestion to use this thread for reporting issues with BETA4, I thought I might give it a bump.
Anyway, why is the Rootkit Scanner doing what I reported?
...
Regarding the Rootkit Scanner:
It finds thousands of entries.
The common factor is; under Details it reports 'Invisible to Win32'.
As a longtime SBS&D user, I am willing to give it a chance, but to be quite honest, I have reservations about whether the 2.0 version will live up to the high standards the original version set.
I...
Seconded, all I want is a simple scanner.
I know the development team read these comments; please do not over-complicate the new version.
There are already too many bloated 'security suites',...
Hosts file.
I reported this a couple months ago for the BETA2.
Or, as I suggested, offer a 'Lite' version with only the scanner.
Having used SBS&D since the early days (I have a copy of v0.9 somewhere), I was quite pleased with the development of the application, until this version.
I understand that it is freeware, and...
I must agree with firefox007, the new SBS&D is shaping up to be another Norton System Works; i.e. a suite of mostly useless (or at least unnecessary and infrequently used) applications that tend to...
@GreeneNY,
I have installed all the BETAs on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 system, and have not encountered the problem you are experiencing.
Perhaps a fresh OS install is the only option to resolve...
I see approximately 20% CPU usage while running Root Kit Deep Scan.
The Scanner Service starts with Windows even though I set it, along with all other SpyBot services, to Manual.
Then why have the Context Menu scan option for folders available at all?
I, for one, feel the Context Menu scan for folders is a better alternative than having to open SB, open the File Scanner,...
The Update appears to be working.
However, the Context Menu scanning issue is not fixed.
Personally, I have all SBS&D services set to manual, and after I run SBS&D, I kill all those services and any other SBS&D processes.
I have had no issues thus far.
Actually, no, that does not do it. I have set all SBS&D services to manual because I do not wish to have any running at startup.
I found one needs to go to Settings>Browsers and uncheck the boxes...
Is there a way (other than uninstallation of SBS&D or disabling the service in Windows Services) to prevent the Scanner Service, SDFSSvc.exe, from running everytime I open a browser?
Excuse me, and I apologize for being off topic, but why would anyone want to downgrade from Windows 7 to XP?
Back on topic, I have full access to the SBS&D folder and all files contained therein....
Unfortunately, I have found another bug; scanning from the context menu does not work.
I have so, even before posting this comment.
Actually, I only found one so far.
This new version is looking fairly good.
So far, better than BETA1, but it still has some bugs that need addressing.
You tried uninstalling in Safe Mode, correct?
I believe it has been mentioned before; the easiest way to uninstall SB is from Safe Mode.
To me, it does not appear "blurred".
Also, what is "changed"?
How about an update for the program itself?
I have been waiting for well over a year for the new version of Spybot S&D, only to have the current BETA fail miserably.
