That worked, and I was able to reset the system restore. I followed the security steps you provided, as well. Everything seems to be running perfectly.

I assume the Windows firewall doesn't cut...

It was already on automatic. I stopped and started the service, but I still can not check the Turn off System Restore box in My Computer -> Properties. It also says (disabled by Group Policy) there.

The computer is running great. After the first round of cleansing it was much improved, and I am glad you gave me the instructions to give it a deep scrub.

Unfortunately now, I have what I hope...
