    Well it's a big moment. I'm actually posting this from the "previously" infected computer. YEAH!!! Everything seems fine again. No weird pauses and re-directs of any kind.

    ran MBAM again

    I rebooted, turned Avast! off and then ran MBAM again.
    This time it ran in only 6 minutes instead of 25!!

    It came up clean - did not find anything...

    Updated Java, ran ATF cleaner and MBAM

    I removed old Java (the one you said and "Java Web Start".
    Then rebooted.
    Then installed new version.

    Ran ATF cleaner

    Ran MBAM (I forgot to dis-able Avast!)
