Default Infected with SpySheriff and Past Patrol

    Ladies/Gentlemen,
Thank You so much for the service you all do to help out the unfortunate infected. I've attempted many other online solutions to getting rid of Spy Sheriff only to see it raise its ugly head with every system re-boot. I could find no report from the Panda online scan. I appreciate your response in advance...Happy New Year!

Welcome to the forum, please read and follow the instructions in this link which was pinned to the top of the forum.

    1) "BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
You are running HJT.exe from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory. This is unsafe as we will have no backups. That is why you received this message when you used HJT: http://russelltexas.com/malware/images/unsafefolder.gif
Please use the information in the following link to place HJT in a permanent, safe folder, I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

    2) Follow these directions also: Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

    3) Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
    • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Make sure you restart the computer, post the required antivirus scan, the Report.txt from SDFix, The report from Smitfraudfix "Search" and a new HJT log.
Let me know how the computer is running.

    Thanks

Default Follow on actions for 12-30

    PSKelley,
Thank You for the prompt reply:
I followed all the actions and upon reboot of the computer following SDFix, the Symantec virus scan was clean, then upon opening my browser auto protect again flagged on SpySheriff and the Red dot with a white "X" appeared in my tray.
Here are the logs...I included a SmitFraudFix that ran before SDFix and after as well as the HJT from after.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Thanks for returning your information.

    1) It appears you may be formatting your HJT log. Please look under the word "Format" at the top of NOTEPAD and uncheck "Word Wrap" if it is checked.

    2) Do you know what this is? C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\htqqurdg.exe << if not navigate to that file and delete it.

    3) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< Tutorial if needed, follow these directions:

    Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional: To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

    4) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

    5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(I am surprised these are there, SDFix should have removed C:\Winstall?)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)
    (old Spysweeper line)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\winstall.exe <<< delete that file

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe <<< delete that file

    8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the report from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

    Thanks

Your Java program is badly out of date. See this information:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< out of date, please download the newest version and remove all other versions in Add Remove programs.

You are not running SpySheriff or other bad programs in Add Remove programs are you? Post the uninstall list for me like this:
    Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Please take care of the outdated Java program first.

    PSKelley,
I followed your second set of instructions to a "T" and it appears like my computer is now "Fixed" and operating correctly.
I can't Thank You Enough for the help.
    Several items that I experienced:
    - I was unable to delete htqqurdg.exe until the computer was in safe mode...then I deleted the .exe and .tpl.
    - I installed the Java re 6 and removed Java 1.4, but Java 1.5.0_04 still shows in C:\Program Files\Java but is not avail for Add/Remove. Is that alright?

Attached is the 2nd set of logs for 12-30.
Thanks again and Happy New Year!

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I do not see any old versions of Java in your running programs. If you wish to be sure, look in Add Remove programs in the Control Panel. Uninstall any old versions from there, keep the newest version only. If you wish to make sure you have the newest version, you can do that here:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Your HJT log appears to be clean of malware, let's clean the System Restore files like this:
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Reboot.

    3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

You may delete the tools we used because they need to be downloaded new if needed again, you can keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish and here is a tutorial for using it:
