    Default Download times

For some reason the time it takes to download updates is ridiculously slow and can take an hour or more, on 256k ADSL, is there a reason for this?
    Thanks for your assistance

Try changing the download server before clicking "Download Updates" and see if you can find a server that downloads faster. See item #4 in the following:

What version of Spybot - Search & Destroy are you running? Go into Spybot > Help > About. Does the screen say?
    • Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3
      --- or ---
    • Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Getting an answer is one thing, learning is another.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition running on a 2.40GHz IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 Processor with 512 MB of RAM and a 533 MHz System Bus.

    Hello,

Spybot-S&D can freeze up if the servers are reacting very slowly.

This often happens the day new updates are released, when too many people try to download them at the same time.
But Spybot-S&D isn't really freezed up, it's just delayed.
There are a few solutions for this problem:
    1. Wait a minute, it should be active again.
    2. Select a different download location (After "Search for updates", you can select another mirror in the toolbar. Therefore click the small arrow next to UniDo (Europe) / SpybotSD.de (Europe))
This will do in most cases. The UniDO mirror, which is set as default, is making some problems these days due to heavy traffic. The EON server does pretty good, so try this one.

    Please try again later.

Our next release of Spybot-S&D will avoid hanging in this situation and display a status dialogue during the waiting period. We're also working on adding more download mirrors and on avoiding hangs due to attacks from the outside.

Information about updating is also available in our How-To section (including a screenshot):
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/update.html
Take a look at point 5 of this description that shows you how to select a different download
    location.

You can still use the manual updater. Download the current one and install it, and you'll be up-to-date.

Here are the direct-update-links where you can reach everytime the latest update:

    http://www.safer-networking.org/file...d_includes.exe
    http://www.safer-networking.org/file...d_advcheck.exe
    http://www.safer-networking.org/file...sd_mainapp.exe
    http://spybot.eon.net.au/files/spybotsd_tools.exe

(Notice: if the Info page does not show the correct update date after installing the updates with the manual updater, please ignore that - it will be fixed in the next release.
That is also the reason why the updates are going to be found again, if you search for them).

    Best regards
    Sandra
