IE closes and pc tries to shut down

generally this happens when the screensaver is interrupted. I scanned with the latest spybot definitions, scanned for virus's with AVG and nothing showed up. I unstalled avg and installed the norton version from google downloads. This ran a prescan and once installed it scanned the whole machine and found nothing. I'm stumped. Does it sound like a virus? Any help would be a most appreciated.
