Default Need serious help to remove trojan New Malware.j

Hi, before going to far I need to point out I am a complete novice at removing virus' and infections on computers.

A little bit of background information: my laptop after start up will display a error about a svchost.exe error, it causes the toolbar and programmes to revert back to the view of windows 98, also it causes the sound to disable and then the error will pop up randomly throughout operation of laptop.

I have currently used Spybot S&D, Registry Fix and McAfee VirusScan.

McAfee VirusScan has detected 1 virus by the name of New Malware.j and said is unremovable and that the filename is C:\Windows\svchost.exe

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    hi Nappa,

    to show all files:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

How Can I Reduce My Risk?

Thank you very much shelf life for responding to my problem, since I originally posted my topic I read many other posts on the forum and used some tools that others have been recommended, I have used Registry fix, which found hundreds of errors and fixed (although it keeps regularly finding new errors everytime i run it) I have also used X-Cleaner, that has found and removed various files also (but keeps finding new files everytime it runs also)

I used Vundo and that did find malware (i think it was the one where you have the security risk at the bottom right hand of the screen), i removed these but since removing they have all come back, also I have used SDFix in safe mode and run McAfee virus scan in safe mode, I have also used SpyBot S&D. Although the laptop seems to be operating slightly better there are still major problems, currently i am not able to get into safe mode, when i press enter on the safe mode selection it brings up lines of .dll script, it says press esc to cancel loading... i have tried many times just leaving to see if it loads up in safe mode and also pressing escape but neither seem to work anymore.

I also have an increased amount of pop ups now.

Would it be advised that the best option would be to just re-format the laptop? as i do not want to waste your time.

    thank you.

    hi Nappa,

    just re-format the laptop
i have no idea what you might have on there as far as malware goes, a reformat might be the quickest thing to do. up to you.
if you want to try a good malware app, download, install update and scan with avg antispyware.

    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5

another way to get to safe mode:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406
    ---------------------------------------

    avg antispyware:
    1. Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    2. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
    3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now" link.
    * Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Hi shelf life sorry for the time its taken to reply, have had more problems, thank you for the method of getting into safe mode that worked but i was unable to download avg anti-spyware, then my internet connection stopped working on the laptop.

I have reformated the laptop and have downloaded the following software: AVG 7.5, AVG Anti-SPyware, COMODO, ATF, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D. all updated.

However I am still receiving an error message:

'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

And after this happens i am experiencing the same sort of problems as before, the sound will no longer function and now it seems also the internet is blocked as webpages won't load.

here is my upto date HJT :

    hi Nappa,

i dont see that 04 item. a reformat would have taken care of any malware. your other problems must not be malware related.

one thing, you dont need two antivirus, i would uninstall any norton app via the add/remove programs panel.keep avg antivirus.
real player is a resource hog i would remove it also unless you really use it. in fact most computers come with loads of bloatware already installed on them, if you see somehting in the add/remove programs panel you dont use, uninstall it, if your not sure what it is leave it. you use AOL? apple quicktime?
you cant get to any web page at all?

I have removed Norton and some other apps like you said that i dont use. Laptop seems to be working fine now, haven't had any errors so far and have been using the laptop for a few hours now, keep running scans aswell to make sure and all coming back clean.

Looks like it all sorted out for now.
