    Default Spybot scan taking a very long time (but not running any AV)

    Hi there,

    I am trying to run a Spybot scan, however every time I do, it seems to hang on a particular check. I am running Win98SE, and have no other software loaded in the background except for Look 'n' Stop firewall. There is no anti-virus software installed. I have downloaded all the latest updates for Spybot.

    It seems to happen when I run a full scan, and hangs when the following is displayed in the status bar:

    Running bot-check (61490/64089: Zlob.ZipCodec)

    Also, when running a minimal spyware scan, it seems to hang while running another check:

    Running bot-check (6223/6223: ZycnosSpace)

    I can leave it running overnight, and it still doesn't move past this point. Note that Spybot doesn't crash as such, just seems to sit here for..ever. However, when Spybot is running, it causes the computer to run extremely sluggishly.. I don't recall it being like this the last time I ran it (around October last year I think).

    Any ideas on why this is happening would be appreciated. I did read this stickied post, however it seemed to be a slightly different situation to this, ie. affected by running anti-virus software and an older update of Spybot.

    Cheers,
    Stuart.

    You could try some of these suggestions:

    Why don't you have an antivirus scanner?

    Thanks, I'll try those methods and let you know how I go.

    uhh don't really know actually! Just careful about sites I visit, use web-based email/no Outlook, run the occasional scan using Kaspersky online and never had a problem. I plan on getting a new PC this year though and will be getting one then.

    There are free antivirus programs available,here are some of them:

    http://www.free-av.com/

    If you decide to download an antivirus,it's best if you just pick one.

    Default Having Same Problem, Still No Solution

    Hello!

    I have been having one of the same problems reported by shehaal.

    When I run a full scan (Spybot 1.4, latest updates), it hangs when the following is displayed in the status bar:

    Running bot-check (61541/61541: Zlob.ZipCodec)

    It doesn't matter if I let it run for 24 hours; Spybot never finishes its scan. Virus scans report no problems.

    The replies to shehaal so far haven't really helped or addressed the specific problem. If anyone has a relevant suggestion it would be appreciated!

    Huck

    This might not work at all,but you could try doing a scan in safe mode.
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...29&postcount=2
    Run in Safe Mode
    Reboot your computer into SafeMode by doing the following:

    * Restart your computer
    * After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping F8.
    * Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
    * Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

    Open Spybot-S&D while still in safe mode.

    * Close all browsers, check for problems and fix everything found in red
    * Repeat until no more items are found in red
    * Close Spybot-S&D
    * Reboot back into Windows
    If that doesn't work,you might want to get checked out in malware removal,to make sure nothing is interfering with Spybot.
    The mandatory steps are here:
