I have spyware which is detected by spybot as VCODEC. The problem can be fixed if I let spybot start on rebooting the computer. It seems that the problem is solved but it keeps coming back. Under VCODEC it shows the ncompat.tbl file located under c:\windows\system32\.

Whenever I start IE it connects to systemwarning(dot)com. I cannot get my homepage to change to anything else (homepage hijacker). I think going to this site everytime I start IE is how I get reinfected. I did find my security settings at LOW and changed them to MEDIUM but I'm still getting infected.

I've tried scanning with Ad-Aware and McAfee VirusScan 9.0 but still cannot get rid of these problems.

Researched on net. Found good info here:

which matched all my symptoms. McAfee VirusScan had an update today.
Scanned and found numerous viruses including Puper.dll which hijacked my homepage. After 3 scans and 2 reboots, virus free. Then ran AntiPuper found here:

Then ran spybot and found vcodec and fixed (with no scan on reboot).

Then deleted all system restore set points. Everything seems fine now.

As a bit of cleanup, you can remove the following with HijackThis:

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {e0103cd4-d1ce-411a-b75b-4fec072867f4} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp98B5.tmp (file missing)

To prevent reinfection, you need to follow up with Windows Updates for your computer to update both IE to SP2 and XP to SP2. Please do that ASAP.

I also suggest that you install and update both SpywareBlaster & SpyGuard to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software:

If you use Internet Explorer, IE-Spyad will add thousands of sites into your IE restricted zone: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm .
