Default Spybot, update error, Cannot open AVI

Problem: When updating the spybot 1.4 program, an error occurs after checking the updates off and selecting a download loactaion. I click download updates and an error comes up " Cannot open AVI "

What Ive tried to fix, I have removed and reinstalled the program numerous times. I have deleted the program directory and removed and cleaned the registry with jv16 power tools. I am stumped. This has been a problem for some time.

Possible cause: I have the Vista Transformation Pack 2.0 installed on my XP Pro, This updates fonts, wallpapers, and various other visual enhancements. I dont know if this could be a problem but who knows.

CANNOT OPEN AVI, while trying to dl updates.

Default Resolution for " Cannot Open AVI " error when dl updates

Hello, thanks for the information. The articles fixed my problem.

I will condense this information here on this forum for others.

    ORIGINAL PROBLEM:

    Vista Trans Pack is loaded
    Spybot 1.4 is loaded
Spybot 1.4 reports during update download
    " Cannot Open AVI "
So you cannot recieve any updates

    PROBLEM RESOLUTION:

    Remove Vista Transformation Pack 2.0
    Finish removal completely
    Spybot will now update properly.

If you still want VTP 2.0 then reinstall it now
Make sure you uncheck the Vista Video Clips option during the setup

    davetgood:

If you are sitting behind a proxy server:
    • Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings. About 2/3 of the way down the option tree there is a category "Web update". Check the last item in the list "Use proxy to connect to update server". A pop-up will come up were you can enter the information required.

    • If you are sitting behind a proxy server and need to know what the settings should be, there are hints in the following article on how to find them:

    If you have a firewall:
    • Authorize SpybotSD.exe to access the internet in your firewall.
