Hi, Average Joe. Welcome to Safer Networking Forums. Please see the thread linked below for complete instructions.

As you have already posted a first HJThis log, just proceed with the remaining steps and post the other logs as reply to this topic for a final check.

    Thank you.

Default Errm hope I haven't messed things up

Firstly....thanks Corrie for taking an interest.

I followed a procedure mapped out in another thread and have done the following:

SmitRem - Runthis.bat - I have a log saved and will post below

Spybot - I can fix all but one of the probs, I have to restart to attempt removal but it just won't have it

Ad-aware - Detected probs and dealt with them all

Ewido - Run the scan and cleaned all but one, wasn't sure? it was a downloader??? I have the log for this saved aswell and will post that too

This is where I'm at right now and I'm quite pleased with how its gone so far.

No more spyaxe desktop icon or annoying warning bubble. I do however have an invalid shortcut on my desktop to "online security guide" it is also on my start menu. it is affliated with this address http://securitylist.net/

I think its some kind of disguise for spyware...very naughty indeed

I will also post up a revised HJT.

I would like to once again thank you for your help. Its nice to know there is a balance of goodness out in cyberspace

Hi, Average Joe. I'm glad things are improving.

You will definitely want to remove that "downloader" with Ewido. It is a trojan. As to the unwanted desktop shortcuts, if you cannot remove them in normal mode, reboot to safe mode again and right-click, selecting delete. Be sure to empty your recycle bin!

Please post the logs as replies, not as attachments as I don't click on file attachments. Thank you.

Default Thanks for the speedy response!!!

    Thanks Corrine really appreciate this...

I thought it would be a bit neater to post attachments...I shall reply with the logs as requested.

Firstly can I delete this downloader without running the whole scan again becasue it took absolutley ages (its in red) and if so where can I find it, I don't have a folder called recycler...that i'm aware of anyway.

Hi, Average Joe. Looks like that did the trick!

    Regarding Limewire,

Limewire (The most current version of Limewire is reported to include spyware. LimeWire 4.9.28 is clean. Older and newer version may not be.)
See Mike Healon's article, "Clean and Infected File Sharing Programs" at http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ .

I suggest that you nstall and update both SpywareBlaster & SpyGuard to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software:

    SpywareBlaster -- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
    SpywareGuard -- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

If you use Internet Explorer, IE-Spyad will add thousands of sites into your IE restricted zone: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm .

Another useful program is StartupMonitor, which will warn you when somethings tries to sneak in: http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

    Regards,

    Corrine

    Default Thanks very much

    Corrine your an

I really appreciate your help and the spy axe issue has been resolved thanks to you.

However Spybot is detecting "Smitfraud C"...it attempts to fix it and suggests rebooting becasue there are changes to registry values.

Upon rebooting spybot fails to fix the problem...I'm not sure if this is related to the spy axe thing or not but the fraud part doesn't sound good...

    do you have any thoughts?

Thanks, Average Joe. I'm glad I could assist.

Smitfraud, SpyAxe, SpySheriff, and more are all "similar", with Smitfraud the original "name" applied to this group. As additional variants with different characteristics were released, additional names have been applied.

I am sorry to say that I am not a SpyBot expert. I'll see if we can locate someone else to assist with your question.

    Hi

Download this file to your desktop
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Close all browsers, right-click and select: Install
It realy doesnt install, just clears all sites in the domains and Ranges keys.
Afterward's you will need to immunize again in SpyBot and re-protect again with SpywareBlaster or re-install iespyadds if its installed, then the file itself can be deleted (DelDomains.inf)

Let us know if the problem persists
