    Default Spybot shut down

the wife/kid PC has tons of popups, McAfee's VirusScan doesn't start up on booting, and Spybot won't even begin a scan, the window just closes. I've tried several times to update to SP2, and I'm having problems with that too. I'm getting myself mentally prepared for reformatting the drive and starting over, maybe I can avoid that...

Hello and sorry for the wait. I do not see anything wrong in this log, are you still having problems? If so, do this:

    1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

    2) You are running an old version of HJT, Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions.
If you need a HJT download link, view this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

Post a new log with version 1.99.1 and I will look at it as soon as possible.

    Thanks...pskelley

Well Sir, this new version shows the 020 lines and we can see the problems. Before we can start, please do this:

    1) You have not followed directions, HJT is running from a Temp folder where the backups will not be safe. Please return to here: C:\Temp\HijackThis.exe and make a new folder called HJT and move the HijackThis.exe and the log that is there into that folder.

    2) Spybot TeaTimer is a good program but it interfers with fixes we will be making. Use these instructions to disable TT until we are done with our fix: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

    3) Because these infections attract other, I suggest you keep the computer offline as much as possible until you are clean.

    4) Download SpySweeper and it must be the "Spy Sweeper 4.5 - Tree Trial" version. Scroll to the bottom of the page in the following link:
    http://www.webroot.com/consumer/prod...r/latestv.html
Then follow these instructions: Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
    (This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

    Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer <<< very important.

    5) Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
    • Install ewido security suite
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
    • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
    • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
      • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
      • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
      • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
      • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
    • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report.
    • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
    Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

    6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items if they are there:

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: OemStartMenuData - C:\WINDOWS\system32\g8lm0i31e8.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: SideBySide - C:\WINDOWS\system32\guard.tmp (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ThemeManager - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fpr8039ue.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WindowsUpdate - C:\WINDOWS\system32\o6840glqe6qe0.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
    Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html
If you can't see the Prefetch folder, use these instructions: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

    7) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log, the Ewido scan results and the SpySweeper log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

    Thanks...pskelley
