Help! Another smitfraud-c.toolbar888 victim

Hi,
Seems like I'm not alone with this problem. Spybot is continually detecting smitfraud-c.toolbar888 on my computer after numerous attempt to fix it. This includes running Spybot S&D in safe mode and with system restore off. I have run AVG antivirus, Adaware, and Vundofix, but they could not find anything. Any help you can lend would be appreciated. Here is my HJT log:

Since I do not see the required online antivirus scan, I want to make sure you have seen this instructions:

All advice given is taken at your own risk.

1) This program is obsolete, C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe no longer supported by Microsoft which purchased it, please uninstall it in add remove programs. It is just wasting your resources at this point.

2) C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\Desktop\VundoFix.exe <<< youy may remove this program from your computer. I doubt we will need it, and would want to download it fresh if we do. It is constantly being updated.

3) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\ <<< check your Java program for an update, once you have the newest version, uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs:

4) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ <<< delete that folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\usmtewwo.dll <<< delete that file

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks for taking the time to help. I followed your instructions and removed Microsoft Antispyware, removed Vundofix, updated Java, downloaded ATF Cleaner, and removed the HJT items. Wiindows wouldn't let me delete the usmtewwo.dll file because "access denied". I ran ATF cleaner and when I rebooted was able to delete the usmtewwo.dll file. Then something tried to redirect IE away from my homepage, but was stopped by the firewall (Sygate). I ran a Spybot check (can't help myself) and the smitfraud was still there.

Is gone from the HJT log. If Windows will not let you delete a file you know is bad, use this tool if it is still there:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\usmtewwo.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

I was able to delete the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\usmtewwo.dll. The computer seems to be acting normal. Another check with Spybot (newest updates as of 5/2/07) still indicates a smitfraud problem with this part of the registry:

I read the threads you sent about false positives and I am assuming this may be one. Should I go ahead and exclude this detection from further searches?

Good morning, that might be something left in your Recycle Bin, make sure it is empty, and scan again. Ig it is still showing then please ask at the Spybot forum and let me know what they have to say. You can post a link here to that topic if you wish.

If all else is back to normal, let me give you some information:

This: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\jusched.exe"
Indicates the Java scheluler is turned on. It is buggy and does not work well. Check to make sure it is set for a time when the computer is available to update and if so then check manually for the latest update. If one is available, and I believe it is, you may want to turn this off to save resources and update manually, since you can't count on it anyway.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
