    Default Post Malware Removal Problems

I spent three days getting rid of Spy Sheriff, Winhound and other apparently related pests including the LOCKSKY WORM and TROJ_INJECTOR. In looking at other threads on this forum, this appears to be a problem for other folks too.

When I got the infection, I was running fully up-to-date versions of Trend Micro PCCillin and Microsoft Anti-Spyware. I thought I was protected. I was able to get rid of the problem(s) with a combination of Spybot Search & Destroy and two programs that TrendMicro support had me run (in Safe Mode) called Sysclean and TSC.

There appeared to be residual damage to my fully up-to-date Windows XP SP2 operating system in that I was getting error messages, and intermitent restarts. I ran the sfc \scannow repair function and that seemed to solve the restart problem. I still get a Windows Explorer error message most of the time (but not every time) I start the computer, and randomly when I am using the computer.

This error message begins: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry....etc" Since I have error reporting activated, an error report is generated and I send it in.(I have saved screenshots of what the Windows Explorer error report contains - I tried to attach them to this entry but the file size was too big).

The error reporting window also offers a "debug" option. If I hit the "debug" button, I get a new message which says "Explorer.EXE" - Application Error The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c81eb33."

I click "ok" in this application error window and the computer operates normally. The computer does not shut down or restart even though the error message indicates that Windows Explorer "needs to close."

In perusing the forums here and at Geeks to Go, I noticed that there is a specfic, chronological process for removing the Spy Sheriff etc problem. So I am wondering (1) if I have have actually removed this malware completely and (2) how I can get rid of this related Windows Explorer error problem.

TrendMicro support has been (surprise!) frustrating, to put it politely, and I would grateful if someone could take a look at my latest Hijack This log and tell me if it looks like I have gotten rid of the problem and offer any advice on fixing the Windows Explorer error issue. Here's my Hijack This log:

I also have the Panda log but your instructions say not to post any logs other than those listed.

    Please advise...

    Default Another Update

In further researching this issue, I noticed that Microsoft offers free tech support for security issues (via their antispyware program). So I called them to see if it was for real and/or effective. The guy in India was able to help me remove the Alexa Toolbar entry that showed up in the Panda scan log. We did this by going into the registry. He said to ignore the MYDLL.dll and vx.tll entries in the Panda scan log.

He actually seemed to know what he was doing. He had me re-run Ewido in safe-mode, and then he checked what processes were running etc. He knew about and approved of smitrem and the process to remove Spy Sheriff described in this forum.

I also decided to uninstall PCCillin (since I was completely pissed about their support help - I have yet to hear from their Level 2 people despite their promises) and install the Microsoft One Beta Security set up. I also felt compelled to do this after reading about the latest WMF vulnerability. Microsoft "claims" that One users are protected from this problem.

So, after the above changes, I ran a new Hijack This log file. Here are the results:

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

    Default It all appears good

Everything seems to be running smoothly, and all scans (Spybot S&D, MS Anti-Spyware, Ewido, Panda, etc) are coming back clean. I noticed Panda seems to try and scare you into buying the program because the scan always comes back with multiple spyware claims, but when you look at the logfile, it is cookies or other minor stuff (although the first couple of scans listed some legitimate problems).

I wanted to thank you guys for your help with this. This forum is set up so it is easy to follow for a do-it-yourselfer. I just followed the pre-posted advice ("SpyAxe, SpySheriff, Winhound - Removal Instructions") and everything eventually worked out. And I say that after having gone to several other forums and using TrendMicro and Microsoft phone support, both of which offered ineffective or incomplete solutions.

Is there a place here, like they have at Geeks to Go, where I can donate a couple of bucks,

    Great

I think the author of smitrem accepts donations, check in its text for an email address, SpyBot (Patric) also can use donations

    Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let me or Tashi know.
