Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.

Since you have infected Java cache, read this:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2

This is probably a Vundo infection, here is information for you.

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

Decide which you are going to run and uninstall the other.

    Since you posted here: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=14053
    Have you seen this information?
The malware removal forum is set up to help those in need of assistance with their personal computers. This service is free and provided by volunteers.
We realise on occasion a business where staff are trained to remove malware need a second opinion. In that case please state that up-front and note the steps already taken. Our volunteers appreciate that.
If the PC owner is being charged by you, please ensure it is a second opinion you are seeking, and not posting your jobs for others to clean.
    Thank you for your understanding.
If you still want help with this, please do this:

    1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

    2) http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home...avacache.shtml

    3) C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT.exe, call it Madorick.exe or whater you wish.

Restart the computer and post the uninstall list and a new HJT log.

    Thanks

Thank you for your reply: I have read the info noted.

I also noted the comment about being a second opinion: I help friends out with their machines, I do not get paid for this. I do have a small business to build web sites and build custom computers for people, but that is not related to my questions here. If I were to come here for advice (and I probably will now that I know it exists) on a particular machine I will note that in my initial post and I will be donating to the cause for this. I did not know about this school to learn how to remove malware untill I found this forum. This sounds very interesting, I will be looking into this and when completed I am considering volentering to help with this forum if you still need helpers.
    --------------------------------------------------------------
I cleared the JAVE Cache as noted.

I have tried to uninstall the Norton Anti Virus but it tells me there is a missing file "instopts.dat".

Thanks for the feedback, remind me before we finish, I have a list of free online schools, and the forums can use all of the help they can get, we are hopelessly outnumbered.

As far as Norton/Symantec, here is information to get it off the computer.
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool
Use the Norton Removal Tool to remove a failed installation or a damaged Norton product.
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl=
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=10069
WARNING: If you'll use the tool above, you will also lose Norton Ghost.

Uninstall list: I am looking for malware and security issues, you may want to look for anything you know should not be there.

LimeWire 4.11.0 <<< your call but I suggest uninstalling it, someone has even set it to run at Startup which is dangerous.

Should be gone once that tool is run.
    Norton AntiVirus 2005 (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton AntiVirus Parent MSI

I am not seeing a whole lot of "malware" in your HJT log, there is no doubt this is a trojan (may just be left from another infection?) >>> C:\Windows\system32\xlibgfl254.dllhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=xlibgfl254.dll+&btnG=Google+Search
If it is stilll there we should be able to remove it manually.

Let's clean that item, what I see and after you run the Norton tool, then post a new HJT log along with a CA scan and we will see if that clears the issues.

    1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
(above is optional, see this: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-180.html )
    O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming.Net\PartyPokerNet\RunPF.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming.Net\PartyPokerNet\RunPF.exe (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\Windows\system32\xlibgfl254.dll <<< delete that file

(if that file causes any problems, use this tool and instructions)
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...42.html#delreb

    5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, results of the CA scan and your feedback.

    Thanks...Phil

Information on the schools will be greatly appreciated. Please note any school specifically associated with the Spybot site, I have used this software for a long time and have found it to be a great product.

    Norton is removed.

Your information on the Limewire is noted and I am contacting the owner on this, I agree with you but I do not remove anything not actually a virus without discussing it with them first. I will convey the concerns over this and have printed some of the articles noted.

    Viewpoint Media Player is removed.

    ATF cleaner was run.

    CA Scan showed nothing found.

HJT log looks clean of malware, if all is running well, clean System Restore files: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=sec_doc_nam

If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.
    http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Make sure to turn it off once the trial is over if you keep it. Uses resources and gives no benefits after the trial.

    Some good information for you:

Yes, the machine is performing great. I Really do appreciate all your help. I am going to start getting into a school and joining the fight. I am a programmer of 35 years and have had PC's since Apples 2's (80 or 81) came out. I do not really understand why someone would get some kind of enjoyment out of "Hosing" up someone else's machine. Also I Like your signoff about thanking a teacher or soldier. Thanks again for all the help! ! ! !

Thanks much for that feedback, I was a late bloomer, only purchased my first computer (Compaq7360/Win98SE) about eight years ago. I have since restored it to pristine condition and only drive it on sunny Sundays once in a while
I bought a Dell, got infected and stumbled into a mentor at Dell Forums (he now owns MRU, one of the schools which is the UK) and he got me interested in malware removal. About 20,000 repairs later...here we are. I know most of the folks at the schools I listed. Luck to you, we are outnumbered and just so you know, it is no longer about kids "hosing" folks computers for fun. It is now all about the $$$ and organized online crime is much involved. Especially Russia (Ukraine), Brazil and more and more China. Until some sure way is found to track down the hackers and some legal system is put into place to deal with the WWW, we are going to have these issues.
Let me know about your progress with training, you can click my avatar and PM.

    Thanks...Phil
