    Default Contra Virus removal help

Last night my computer became infected with Contra Virus. I have installed and run Spybot S&D but although it is supposed to have removed Conta Virus it is still running. I ran my anti virus Kaspersky 6, which didn't pick up anything. I have a Windows XP Firewall.

I have followed the steps outlined in the sticky:
    1. installed an started running eTrust Anti Virus Web scanner but towards the end of the scan my browser (IE7) crashes.
    2. rebooted my computer in safe mode and ran Spybot-S&D, checked for problems and fixed everything found in red. Then I got a message saying: "Some problems couldn't be fixed; the reason could be that the associated files are still in use (in memory). This may be fixed after a restart. May Spybot-S&D run on your next system start up? It highlights 3 problems it can't fix: Ad-protect and Spy Shield. So, I let it run another scan at start up and it comes up with the same 3 problems.

I would be grateful for any help. Here is my HijackThis logfile:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
    • Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
    • Click the
      Download
      button to the right.
    • Check the box that says:
      Accept License Agreement.
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Smile successful removal - I hope

    Hi Blade81

The other user of the computer had attempted a manual removal of the Contra Virus using the Add/remove programs. The only thing I did before attempting your steps is to install and run Super Antispyware which has successfully removed Contra Virus (along with 4000 others things). After installing Super Antispyware I went through your steps to check there were no remaining hidden folders/files, and I have also installed the newest version of Java as per your instructions.

I post the latest hjt log below. Many thanks for your help.

    Hi

Looks good. Better run Kaspersky webscanner though. Before it let's clean some temporary files.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop. Reboot into safe mode.

In safe mode double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

    Under Main choose:
    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Cookies
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache

    *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

    Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    Reboot back into normal mode.

Please do an online scan with
    Kaspersky
    WebScanner
    (use Internet Explorer)

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
    Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest
      definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise
        Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been
      infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

    Hi Blade

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have downloaded the ATF cleaner and, as directed, removed the files in the following folders:
    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Cookies
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache

    Firefox:

    Opera:

I am now trying to download the files for the Kaspersky online scanner and I cannot install the ActiveX files in order to run the scanner. I click to allow it to install the files and just get the following pop up page. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html
Welcome to the Kaspersky Online Scanner! Use it to scan your PC for viruses and other malware for free
Warning: if you have installed Kaspersky Online Scanner BETA, please manually uninstall it using "Add/Remove Programs" before installing this version! Otherwise this version will not function correctly.

    Benefits:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus exceptional detection rates and thorough scanning
Hourly AV database updates available each time the Online Scanner is launched
Heuristic analysis to detect unknown viruses
Simple installation (just click on a link)

    Requirements and limitations:

When using this service for the first time, you have to run with Administrator privileges in order to install the product. Also, you will need to download and install files about 400 KB in size (about 1 minute on a 57.6 kbps connection) followed by 7 MB of virus definitions.
However, if you use the Online Scanner again, you will only need to download the files that have been updated since your last scan.
The Online Scanner service offered by Kaspersky Lab uses Microsoft ActiveX technology. Microsoft ActiveX Technology and the Kaspersky Online Scanner work only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.
We cannot guarantee that the Online Scanner will function correctly if you are using any other browser or any Internet Explorer extensions (such as AvantBrowser). If you use a different browser, you can use the Kaspersky File Scanner to scan individual files.
The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not scan RAM, boot sectors and MBRs, so it cannot detect malicious code located in these areas.
Please note: The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not protect against malicious code, and cannot prevent future infections. It only detects malware that has already penetrated your computer. We strongly recommend that you install a full antivirus solution to protect your system.

    Privacy statement:

The Kaspersky Online Scanner will collect information about the malicious programs found on your computer during the scanning process. The information will be sent to the Kaspersky Virus Lab for statistical purposes. No personal information about you or specific information about your system will be collected or transmitted to Kaspersky Lab.

When you first click "Accept" on http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html does there appear notification in upper part of browser windows telling that you have to click on notification if you want to allow downloading ActiveX? After clicking on notification it should bring back that same site. Click accept again and it should ask if you want to install the .cab file. After that it should update the definitions.

If that doesn't work then you can try Pand Active scanner.

    • Please go
      HERE to
      run PandaActiveScan...

    • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
    • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan
(Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start
      the scan
    • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected,
click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it
to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

It didn't work with Kaspersky again. I tried Panda Active Scan and got the following error message:

An error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try again
Possible causes of this error are:
Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded.
    Problems with the Internet connection.
The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,...

With both I clicked to accept ActiveX etc, but it will not download.

    Hi

Does your account have administrator rights?

Found following instructions concerning problems with Kaspersky online scanner (source):

"Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

If having a problme doing the above

Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.

To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:

    * Open Internet Explorer.
    * Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
    * Click on the Security tab.
    * Make sure that all four item (Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites) are set to their default settings."
