Smile Virtumonde detected by Spybot SD

I'd really appreciate some help in resolving an apparent Virtumonde infection. My Spybot S&D scan detected "Virtumonde" and displayed it as: Library C:\Windows\System32\ckofpad.dll However, Spybot was unable to remove it after many attempts, including reboot scans. I've ran VundoFix but it did not detect any problem files. Running eTrust Antivirus also did not detect any problematic files. Although the Spybot scan in Safemode again detected the problem and displayed it as mentioned earlier it has not been able to remove it.

    My HJT log as follows:

    DMan48,

Welcome to Safer Networking. I need you to do a couple of things please.

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Crawler Toolbar.

Go to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and open the folder and right click on the HJT Icon, (looks like a red stick of dynamite with a plunger) and rename it to Scanner.exe. <-- Don't forget the .exe and post a new log.

    DMan48,

Vundo is not showing up on your HJT log, if you had Vundo you would be getting relentless Pop Ups.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Look for this file C:\Windows\System32\ckofpad.dll Right click on it and go to properties and let me know who the owner of the file is.

Spyware Terminator is listed on the Rogue Anti Spyware Programs, so I would uninstall it via the Add Remove programs in the Control Panel. You can read about it here.
    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Run the trial of AVG Anti Spyware.

Make sure you follow these instructions correctly to Remove or Quarantine what it finds and also to save the report, without me seeing the report my hands are tied.
Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.1.43 to your desktop. It's very important that I see the report so make sure you follow the instructions and save the log.

    • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
    • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
    • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
    • Under Reports
    • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
    • Un-Select Only if threats were found
    • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.

    Boot your computer into Safemode
    • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
    • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
    • This will bring up a menu.
    • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
    • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
    • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
    • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
    • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
    • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
    • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <--Don't forget this
    • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
    • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

    Ken545,
I looked at C:\Windows\System32\ckofpad.dll but the author tab was blank and only info I could glean from it was the created date of Jul 30, 2006 and modified date of Sep 8, 2005--which I found odd since it preceded the create date.

I then uninstalled the Spyware Terminator and rebooted. Then I downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and launched the program to select the settings you suggested. Instantly after launching the program however a window appeared stating Malware Found: Trojan.Agent.ajz with location C:\program files\rnamfler\naomf.exe. This .exe is for a 'net nanny' program I downloaded from a site called 'naomi family safe internet' at www.naomifilter.org. The AVG description of this trojan indicated that this type of trojan proliferates by pretending to be a useful program but is in fact malicious malware. So I unistalled the naomi program using the unistall script provided by the program itself since the 'add/remove programs' in the control panel did not display the program. Then I selected the clean and move to quarantine option provided by the AVG program, so I could continue to select the settings you so clearly communicated for the scanning and reporting options.

After rebooting in safemode I ran the scan. It found 8 tracking cookies of medium risk and then I selected "Apply all Actions". They were all quarantined. After doing so I went to the Reports tab to save the report, however, it displayed no reports. I doubled checked the report options I made earlier and confirmed that the "Automatically generate report after every scan" was in fact selected as well as to ensure the "Select Only if threats were found" was UNchecked. But still no report was generated. I'm not sure what went wrong. I ran the scan again breifly but stopped it just to see if the report would work and if I missed something. That time a report had generated automatically. But unfortunately I don't have the critical information I had so carefully tried to preserve for your analysis.

However, here is the new hjt log:

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

    Good Morning,

Go ahead and delete this file but leave it in the Recycle Bin for a week or so to make sure there are no problems.
    C:\Windows\System32\ckofpad.dll

    Remove these with HJT

Overall it's running ok without any noticable detriments. Apart from the Spybot scan persistently reporting of the virtumonde infection, I had not experienced the 'typical' effects of virtumonde I had read about.

    p.s.
As fyi, I noticed that the Spyware Terminator program listed on the Rogue Anti Spyware Programs is produced from a source with different domian than the one I had, from Crawler company. In fact the Spywarewarrior lists the Crawler produced Spyware Terminator program as a recommended program, noted in the group C comparison, in link below:

    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.htm

Thanks again for all your time

    Good Morning,

As far as Spyware Terminator , its still questionable at this point so if your happy with it keep it but there are better products out there.

You need to update Spybot Search and Destroy , here is a quick tutorial .

    • During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
    • Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
    • Then to Updates Search for Updates
    • If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
    • Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
    • Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
    • Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
    • Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
    • Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
    • Let it scan your system
    • Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.
    • Reboot your computer.

You also have Spyware Guard running which is a recommended program, you also have the Tea Timer in Spybot running so don't use them both.

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
    • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

    Remove this entry with HJT.
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=

The rest of your log looks fine and I see no evidence of any part of Vundo running on your system, believe me if you where infected with Vundo you would know it. If after updating Spybot and it still picks it up , try posting here and see what they say. If they say that its still present we can dig deeper so let me know, I will keep this thread open for you for a bit.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
    • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
    • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
    • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
    • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
    • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
    • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
    • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Thanks for stopping by Safer Networking, I'm glad I was able to help you.

    Thanks Ken545,
Your instructions worked perfectly. Ran Spybot and got a clean bill of health! Thanks so much. I also took your advice on the installing the programs you recommended. Though having some trouble getting Zone Alarm to allow my MS Outlook to work...

Thanks again for all your help!

Glad things are well. You may just have to give Outlook permission to access the internet. Next time you launch Outlook it should ask you for permission, give it and tick the box to allow it at all times. Open up ZoneAlarm and click on the Program tab and and make sure that Outlook has access.
