    Default Am I infected?

Recently, my PC has been getting a "System Alert" balloon in the tray that advises me that I am infected with spyware. When I clicked on it the first time it sent me to a website to download and install a virus scan program which would then cause me to buy the program to actually fix anything.

I have run Spybot-S&D(both in regular mode and safe mode), Ad-Aware, McAfee Security Center scan and the online scan and none of those detect any problems. However, the balloon remains.

Here is the results of the online scan(I think this is what you need):
Scan Results: Scan Completed. 181105 files scanned. No viruses found.

    File Infection Status Path
    - No Infections

    This is my HiJackThis log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

    Search:
    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
    http://www.beyondlogic.org/consultin...rocessutil.htm

    Post the C:\rapport.txt

    Thanks

    Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

    Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running now. We may have more to do.

    Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, a little more cleaning to do, first some information.
    Please see this: http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-1744.html

I stongly suggest you remove that junk from your computer. Do so like this:

    1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Boonty Games and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

    4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbar...rch.jhtml?p=ZJ
    O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://download.games.yahoo.com/game...ploader_v6.cab
    O23 - Service: Boonty Games - BOONTY - C:\Program Files\Common Files\BOONTY Shared\Service\Boonty.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\BOONTY Shared\ <<< delete that folder

    6) If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.
    http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

    7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    Thanks

I followed the instrucyions as closely as I could.
    O23 - Service: Boonty Games - BOONTY - C:\Program Files\Common Files\BOONTY Shared\Service\Boonty.exe
This was not on my list when I ran HJT so I skipped that part.

    ::Report end
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
I ran this scan and found a lot of infections. All were cleared and I think everything went smoothly with that.

The ATF Cleaner seemed to freeze up after it emptied my Recycle Bin. I opened Task Manager and it was listed as "Not Respoding." I attempted running it again and the same thing happened.

Thanks for returning your information, most of the stuff in the scan is junk that is backed up in System Restore. The rest you appear to have cleaned succesfully. We will clean those System Restore files, but I should have asked to see a last HJT log. Would you post that log and any comments you have. I will respond with final instructions as soon as possible after I see that HJT log.

It is rare for ATF-Cleaner not to work, I use it on almost every cleanup. If you have it installed, delete it and use this Windows tool:
    Clean Manager

I ran the ATF Cleaner again and it worked definately this time. I think it worked the first time also, my RecycleBin was emptied while it was running. It just seemed to freeze up at the end when the pop-up box saying it was complete appears.

Thanks for the HJT log and the feedback, everything is looking good Let's finish like this.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

    Some good information for you:
