Windows XP SP2 comp under attack

[MISCDEBRIS]

Hello. We think we've become infected with a virus/malware and would appreciate any help and advice you could give us. Windows runs slow, and when you open Task Manager, it shows lots of programs running at 10K+ memory usage. Please keep in mind we are computer morons and as basic as your explanations/instructions could be would be great.

Ran your Spybot and removed several suspicious items. Have now also downloaded and ran Kaspersky Anti-Virus and HiJackThis. Could not get the computer to run in safe mode.

You have junk in your HJT log I really don't believe should be on anyones computer, and after I looked at the HJT log, I looked at Kaspersky and they agreed with me. Both infected items they located are part of what I saw. We will remove the junk and do some cleaning and then you give me feedback about performance.

1) TeaTimer will block the changes we must make, use these instructions to turn it off until you ae finished:

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall MyWaySearch, SideStep if there.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

We have Verizon Yahoo for eMail, and recently it started popping up icons for chat. Not sure if it's required to run eMail.

Holy cow, I thought we were going to have to get a new computer!! Screen froze, had to finally power the darn thing off. And there's been a flurry of Norton Security 'message balloons' at restart.

Per your instructions, downloaded with no problem ATF Cleaner, then went through the instructions to turn off TeaTimer. It quit at the point where the 'allow' window was supposed to pop-up, and all the icons disappeared from the screen and the computer froze. Then an End Program window for "DSNagt.exe" flashed up and was gone, followed after 5 minutes by another End Program window (for "Dell Auto Config" I think?). Since it froze I tried Cntrl/Alt/Del twice, and nothing happened. Then I tried the On/Off button on the CPU, and nothing happened. Finally pulled the plug (power supply), and it went dead. After a while I plugged the power supply back in, and then pushed the CPU On/Off button, at which point it powered up, and restarted to the Windows "choice of user" screen.

Got into Windows, and did instruction #3 with no problem.

Moving on to #4, the first R1 indicated (R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DE) was no longer there. The next 5 "R1"s were, and I checked them. "R3", "02", "02", & "09" were gone. The remaining "016"s were there and got checked. Completed as instructed.

After that finished, ran ATF Cleaner, restarted Windows, went back & reselected TeaTimer, and ran a new HiJackThis scan.

So far Windows appears to be working o.k. The other thought is should we have our Norton Security turned off or on during this? Everytime we restart/sign onto Windows, it says "No virus protection detected." This last time, it also said "No Firewall detected". Please let me know how to check our Norton status.

When changes are being made, many malware type programs will inform you of each change, if you want to turn them off until you are done is up to you, but I would not be online at the time.

I can not identify any malware in the HJT log

Norton Security: Open Start > Control Panel > Security Center. All three areas should be green for go. Does Norton supply your firewall also? You have drop down menus with instructions, you may have to restart the programs? If you have issues I would contact Symantec/Norton.

Run another scan with Kaspersky and I do not need to see the results of a clean scan, only if you have questions.

Let me know how this goes, I want all issues resolved before we send you on you way.

Gotcha. Thanks for this info, it will be useful in amping up our virus/malware protection. I'm not sure what (if any) firewall we're using right now. That's why I'm so grateful for your info - I don't even know where to start!

I can't find Kaspersky to run it. Under Control Panel>Add/Remove it's listed as installed, but I can't find it anywhere on my desktop or Start>All Programs.

O.k., I don't know if this is related or not, but everytime I try to do something (hit "reply" or the "Submit Reply"), it takes a really long time, and comes back with an error message. Also there is a delay in the screen showing what I'm typing. *ACK!*

No...referring to programs that block malware, some see the changes you are making and do not know if the changes are legitimate or not. Some programs like Spybot S&D TeaTimer must be turned off and at time even uninstalled.

Try searching for Kaspersky to see where search says it is.
error message: I would need error messages "word for word" to research them and you can do the same with google.

I have a little knowledge of troubleshooting but I should have said "malware issues".

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

O.k., understood re: having to suspend/turn off TeaTime. I know Symantec/Norton and Spybot don't get along, but I'm about ready to toss Norton, so we're gonna check out the info you listed, see if we can get Norton to work properly. If not, hopefully one of those suggested in those articles will be useful.

Re: Kaspersky - the only place I could find it is as CKAVWebScan Object under "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program File". It won't allow it to run, copy nor move it to another folder. Should I just remove it, then download & reinstall it?

To save yourself some effort, look at the two items at the beginning of the first Kaspersky scan that were identified as infected. Please note that we removed both items with HJT and they are no longer in your HJT log. I would say you are safe to delete the Kaspersky online scan.
