    Default Stubborn Smitfraud infection

    Hello everyone!

I'm a pc technician and am new to the forum. Today's problem is a laptop that was seriously infected with well over 200 viruses. I've cleaned all the others off successfully, but I am unable to get this damn smitfraud removed! I have read the guides and am in need of recommendations. I've already ran the latest version of Hijack and have removed ones that I knew were bad. Anything left over I'm uneasy with removing and would like some help. I really don't want to have to format this person's laptop Here is the hijack this log. Any help would be greately appreciated as always

Also, I have ran Spybot, Hijack this, Vundofix, VirtumundoBeGone, SmitfraudFix, CWShredder and Avast a few times to clean off whatever else I can. The laptop currently being scanned by NOD32's free online scanner eset.com/onlinescan and so far has 1 infection found. Thanks again everyone.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Since you are new to the forum, please read the instructions above, which are also Pinned to the top of the forum, especially post #5.
If the PC owner is being charged by you, please ensure it is a second opinion you are seeking, and not posting your jobs for others to clean. Volunteers are not here to support such.
Having this understanding I can say that there are several tools that will remove your problem:
    O21 - SSODL: wmphost - {C78264B0-C516-4C3B-81FF-9F4DDAF28F57} - C:\WINDOWS\wmphost.dll
O21 - SSODL: wmpdev - {41679713-E27A-420B-BD3B-D7B946FDE54C} - C:\WINDOWS\wmpdev.dll But since this was added to Smitfraudfix fix, I suggest you use it, but first delete the old version and download the new here:
Version 2.217 (August 26, 2007) <<< those .dlls were added this date.
    http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

While I have you in the chair, let me point out a couple of other issues:

    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< badly out of date and likely the reason for the infection, if not it is just a matter of time.

    For your information:
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge.
    http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/newslette....php#viewpoint
    http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

F:\Cleanup Programs\HijackThis.exe <<< HJT must run from a drive or it cannot store logs and backups needed for safety. If you are going to use this tool, here is a tutorial to help:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial42.html

My suggestion would be to use the link to the self-installer in the instructions and here:
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...HJTInstall.exe

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

    pskelley:

Thanks for your timely response! I assure you, I am merely here for recommendations and some guidance on removing smitfraud. I would not abuse this forum or its members in any way, shape or form.

Ahh, see I was worried about removing those two files:

    wmphost.dll, wmpdev.dll

As I feared that they were associated with Windows Media Player due to their abbreviated names and none of my programs were picking them up as smitfraud.

I attempted to remove those entries you mentioned in Hijackthis! which I put in its own folder on the root of the drive and was unsuccessful in removing them.

I then downloaded and ran the latest version of smitfraudfix (I was totally unaware that they had updated it) twice in normal mode, on account of safe mode is inaccessible on this computer due to a blue screen and the infection seems to be gone. I am running further checks afterwards to ensure it's gone, but it seems that the latest version of smitfraudfix did the trick.

Thanks also for the java update recommendation. I wasn't aware of how old a version they were running and will take your suggestion and update it.

    Thanks again for the help!

No problem and thanks for the feedback. If you want me to take a look at the HJT log when you finish, post it.

    Thanks...Phil

    pskelley:

Thanks again for your help. I've been running the system for several hours now and have yet to experience any more smitfraud-like activity. That would be great though, if you could give the last HijackThis! log a quick glancing over. I only gave it a quick glance myself, so I might have missed something but it seems to be clean now.

By the way, this may not be the proper place to ask, but how does one become a checker on this site? I'd love to be able to contribute to this forum in some fashion!

Besides Viewpoint which I provided information about, You have this item:
    O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/chzl/def...loader_v10.cab

I would use HJT to remove it.

There is a topic dealing with your question here:

Training is available free at various forums, unfortunately this is not one of them. If you wish more information, make me aware and I would be glad to provide it.

Since this computer had a nasty infection, if you have not cleaned the System Restore files, I suggest this:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

    Some good information for you:

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.
