Default Difference between manual update and auto

    Greetings,

Last night I installed the manual updates by downloading the file.

Tonight I ran the auto update and it listed a lot of files some dated from last year.

So the two different methods are different?

    Thanks,

    David

    Hello professordave.

Members use the manual updates if for some reason they cannot access the servers via the integrated updater to download the latest definitions.

On the download page as you saw the latest update is available to obtain manually. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
    For example: Detection updates 2006-01-13

    To see the update history:

    Please see the posts below.

    Hope that helps.

Excuse me jumping into this thread
I understood the updates were cumulative see http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=736
Can someone clarify because I download manually and back up the file on an external disk in case I have to reformat. That way I can reinstall the program and then reinstall the detection updates so as to be up to date.

Am I wrong? I am now downloading manually the latest defs and it is about 1.33 MB. I also ran the auto and got 1 MB of detections and smaller updates of sizes like 54 KB,181 KB,34KB, 22KB and 365 KB. The whole lot seems to be the same size as the manual update? Clarificvation appreciated

You are right, I made an error in my description. Sorry about that.

    To clarify.
professordave, after installing Spybot-S&D and updating manually;did you go into Mode>Advanced>Settings and check 'Display available beta versions' and then download then via the Integrated Updater?

If so you would have received more definitions when using the Integrated updater.

The initial integrated update of Spybot-S&D without the following settings:
    • Display available beta versions
    • Display updates for other languages

    Should currently download the following:
    • Detection rules - !Updated detections (1 MB) - 2006-01-20
    • English descriptions - English target descriptions file (54 KB) - 2005-12-16
    • English help - English help file (181 KB) - 2005-08-26
    • English help for TeaTimer - English help file for TeaTimer addon (34 KB) - 2005-07-25
    • English language - Updated English language file (22 KB) - 2005-12-23
    • Immunization database - !Updated Immunization database (365 KB) - 2005-09-23
    • Main skins - New skin for colorblind people (393 B) - 2005-01-28

After the initial update, only updated files are presented for download. You will note that some of these dates have last year's dates.

The manual update (spybotsd_includes.exe) currently updates the following files only (detections):
    • Output folder: C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Includes
      Extract: Browserpages.sbs
      Extract: Cookies.sbi
      Extract: Cookies.sbs
      Extract: Dialer.sbi
      Extract: Dialer.sbs... 100%
      Extract: Domains.sbs
      Extract: Hijackers.sbi
      Extract: Keyloggers.sbi
      Extract: Logs.uts... 100%
      Extract: LSP.sbi
      Extract: Malware.sbi
      Extract: OperaPlugins.sbs
      Extract: ProcWatch.sbs
      Extract: PUPS.sbi
      Extract: RegWatch.sbs
      Extract: Revision.sbi
      Extract: Revision.sbs... 100%
      Extract: Searchpages.sbs... 100%
      Extract: Security.sbi
      Extract: Services.sbs
      Extract: Spybots.sbi
      Extract: Tracks.uti
      Extract: Trojans.sbi
      Extract: URL-Blacklist.sbs
      Completed

There appears to be a difference in the updates since the manual update (spybotsd_includes.exe) only seems to update the files in the Includes folder and does not appear to update help, language, etc. files.

So is there any point in downloading the includes folder and saving it to external disk? Is the help, language etc necessary for security?
