Default MVPS Host and S&D Host Changes

    Hi Guys,

Probably that was asked already... so just "show me the finger" --> point out where...

Could there any conflicts occur like duplicates/overwriting existing S&D changes with new MVPS used ... or should one just use Host Manager to merge MVPS. etc... or it is suggested not to use both but one of them

    Thanks
    my regards

    SiberLynx:

As of 2007-11-01 the MVPS HOSTS file contains 16316 entries. As of 2007-11-14 Spybot's HOSTS file contains 7500 entries (actually 7493 plus 7 duplicate entries). There are 528 entries that appear in both lists of sites.

Using the MVPS HOSTS file alone there 16316 sites blocked. Using the Spybot's HOSTS file alone there 7493 sites blocked. Using both the MVPS HOSTS file and Spybot's HOSTS file together there 23281 sites blocked.

Duplicate entries in the HOSTS file do not appear to cause a problem except to increase the number of entries in the HOSTS file.

Note of caution: If you use both the MVPS HOSTS file and Spybot's HOSTS file together, remember that MVPS HOSTS file is a replacement file and Spybot's HOSTS file is an add on file. If you replace your HOSTS file with the MVPS HOSTS file, you must add Spybot's HOSTS file entries again.

The only possible adverse affect of using both files together may be the size of the resulting HOSTS file. That issue is covered on the MVPS site. From:

Editors Note: in most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. This only occurs in W2000/XP/Vista. Windows 98 and ME are not affected.

To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor"

Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
Select: Manual, or Disabled (recommended) click Apply/Ok and restart. [more info]

When set to Manual you can see that the above "Service" is not needed (after a little browsing) by opening the Services Editor again, scroll down to DNS Client and check the "Status" column. It should be blank, if it was needed it would show "Started" in that column. There are several Utilities that can reset the DNS Client for you ... [more info]

    Hi md usa spybot fan,

Thanks for reply and clarification -
especially stressing the importance of 2 below:
1)"... Duplicate entries in the HOSTS file do not appear to cause a problem..."
2)"...If you replace your HOSTS file with the MVPS HOSTS file, you must add Spybot's HOSTS file entries again..."

...and DNS Client service was disabled long ago here

    Thanks again
    My best regards
