    Default Virtumonde returned – Please help

    I had this problem the other day and thought I might have fixed it after reading some of the posts here. I guess I was wrong. I ran Combofix and things seemed normal until today. I currently have two icons on my desktop, a blue “Live Safety Center” and a green “Online Security Guide”. They are both shortcuts that point to a web site that I will not list here. I have had these before and they are followed by browser popups and virus warnings. I have Norton Internet Security 2007 installed but am unable to due a complete system scan. Perhaps the problems are not related but I thought I would mention it.

    Today I ran SpybotSD and it removed a few items but needed me to reboot so it could remove some others. I disabled Tea Timer prior to running. After reboot I ran HijackThis (renamed to Scanner). I have enclosed the log below.

    I would appreciate any help offered.

    Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
    "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
    All advice given is taken at your own risk.
    Please make sure you have read this
    information
    so we are on the same page.

    You are still infected, these lowlife have changed the way they do their dirty business, and this one can be tough to remove. Please stay offline when you are not troubleshooting, more junk can be downloaded.

    I see you ran combofix, could you post the combofix log in your next post.

    http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

    "Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

    http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

    Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
    Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    *****Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.*****
    In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
    the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

    Post the Vundofix report and a new HJT log. Please also post the combofix log I requested.

    Thanks

    Thank you for your assistance, I appreciate it.
    I have enclosed the log files you requested. I am aware that my JRE is out of date and as soon as I attach the infected system to the network I will update it.

    VundoFix V6.6.1 <<< old version, delete it from your computer and download version 6.6.2 from the link I provided and run it again. It was just updated for the newest Vundo infections. Post that report and a new HJT log run after Vundofix and a restart.

    additional instructions:
    These are three Vundo files still in the HJT log.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsr.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xnnykmcn.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gilkijyc.dll

    If the Vundofix does not find and delete those, then do this:
    Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box
    above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the
    next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add
    File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

    I'll need the Vundofix report and HJT log after all instructions are followed.

    Thanks

    I hope I followed your instruction correctly. I downloaded v6.6.2 of VundoFix and ran it. The only new dll it found was C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsr.dll plus a awtsr.ini and a awtsr.ini2. Before clicking on the Remove Vundo button I added the other two dll files you listed. I then clicked the Remove button.

    The system rebooted and once it came up I received an error (RUNDLL was in the title bar of the error box). The message given was “Error loading C:\windows\system32\gilkijyc.dll. The specified module could not be found".
    I then clicked the OK button.

    I am unable to find the new VundoFix.log file. A system search came up empty. Also my Norton Internet Security 2007 indicated it needs fixing but no specifics were given as to why. It usually indicates why.

    I then did a reboot and received the same RUNDLL error message and now Norton does not indicate that it needs fixing.

    I have included a new HJT log file plus the contents of VundoFix Backups folder and the addmorefiles.txt file that was in the folder.

    If you installed Vundofix to the Desktop as instructed, the report I ran to test the new version was on the
    C:\ as VundoFix.txt. My report shows this:
    VundoFix V6.6.2
    Checking Java version...
    Scan started at 8:26:06 AM 11/17/2007
    Listing files found while scanning....

    How to make files and folders visible:
    Click Start > Open My Computer.
    Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
    Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
    Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
    You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

    I did everything as you specified. After running HJT I decided to run Spybot one more time. It came up with three Virtumonde entries. I went ahead and had Spybot fix the problems. I saved the Spybot log to a text file. I then rebooted and everything came up like normal. I did not get the RUNDLL error I had previously. I am posting my last HJT log and the first few lines of the Spybot log that shows the Virtumonde entries. The entire Spybot log is 256KB so I will not post it unless there is something you need to look at other than the lines I am posting.

    I am not going to attach to the Internet until I hear from you regarding the Spybot listing.

    Thank you for your efforts

    Good morning, first let me say the HJT log appears clear malware If we get to the point we have resolved all issues but Spybot S&D issues, you may ask about those here: http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
    Spybot S&D is a very complex tool and I will not pretend to understand it completely. I can tell you this one:
    Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled <<< appears to have been asked and answered
    by Zenobia, Spybot Advisor Team here:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=5983

    The others are likely leftovers in the registry after we removed the executable and are benign. I will give you information to run a cleaner which will look at the registry before we finish, just make sure I do.

    What I would like to do now is look at a Kaspersky scan, if anything that can cause you problems is still there, Kaspersky should find it. Before you start, remove combofix, the C:\qoobox\quarantine folder and Vundofix including the C:\VundofixBackups\ folder from your computer.

    Empty the recycle bin and if you store files in the Symantec quarantine folder, please delete them.

    Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
    Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

    Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

    You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

    * The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    * Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    * Now click on Scan Settings
    * In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    * Standard
    * Scan Options:
    * Scan Archives
    * Scan Mail Bases
    * Click OK
    * Now under select a target to scan:
    * Select My Computer
    * This will program will start and scan your system.
    * The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    * Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
    * Save the file to your desktop.

    Then post it here.

    Thanks

    Good morning,

    I ran another Kaspersky scan but I did not do all you requested. I completely spaced over your instructions to check the scan settings. I have to admit I am real paranoid when I connect the infected computer to the Internet. I kept looking for popups while Kaspersky was running. I will run another one tonight because I want to be sure it looks for everything.

    At the end of this post I have listed the complete Kaspersky scan that I did do. I have isolated and listed directly below all 19 items the scan marked as infected. Some of these are in hidden system folders. If this post turns out to be too long then I will post the log a following post.

    I’m not sure if I should delete the Symantec stuff in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine. When I bring up Norton and ask to see all the quarantine stuff it tells me there is nothing.

    I have already deleted C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\X-P III Backup\The Bat!\MAIL\Qwest\Trash

    It looks to me like some of the infected files are in restore points. I’m not sure how all that works but if possible I would like to remove those restore points since I can’t remember ever using one. I am wondering if there is a reference somewhere that points to these files or does the system scan the folder to determine what restore points it has. I’m worried if I remove the files the system will become confused.

    I have highlighted two file name entries that look like some of the weird dlls we deleted previously. These files are hddijmqf.exe and yivymsbe.dl.

    I’m sorry it took so long for me to get back to you.

    Here are the 19 files that were marked as infected:
