Please Help!!!

My husband is having some major issues with his computer right now. He is using Windows XP.

He cannot:

Install Spybot

Install Hijack This

Install Avast

He can't even go to the webpages for them - I had to email him the install files for them. The browser will close automatically. If he tries to install from the installers I send him, they close.

If he searches online for the terms "spybot" "ad aware" etc, the browser closes right away.

He ran Ad-Aware, CWShredder, Norton, and AVG and nothing was found.

Any ideas?? We are at a loss & are trying to avoid a reformat.

Also, CWShredder says that coolwebsearch is not on the system, which is what I *thought* the problem was.
