    Default Winsys2.exe-- help, please.

Hello, I've recently opened my processes to see this nasty and suspicious process staring at me.

file locations for Winsys2.exe search come up as:
    c:windows/system32/winsys2.exe
    c:windows/prefetch/WINSYS2.EXE-2876619B.pf

I did a online Kepersky scan, but I accidentally exited it... it will not allow me to redo.

Sorry for the wasted space, but I've been able to do the Kapersky scan again.

I do not know if I should have waited for results to come back or not. I think that I should inform the staff members of this situation to prevent an early start to fixing this problem.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

My first look, I was sure that was a trojan and then you posted a clean Kaspersky scan. Well, Kaspersky is good but it can make a mistake too, so let's look at that item. First the Google:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

Now to be sure, scan it with one of these free scans:
    http://virusscan.jotti.org/
    http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
    http://www.virustotal.com/
    scanning: C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys2.exe

Let's have combofix take a look, read and follow the directions or the tool will not work.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the results of the scan, the combofix log and a new HJT log. Add any comments you think will help.

    Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and it looks like that is a bad item and that it was installed on Monday, December 10, 2007, 3:08:07 PM.(as you are aware)
You would know then if it was supposed to be installed I have to assume as this appears to be your computer even though I see this name:
    Melinda 2008-01-06 20:15:46.1

Combofix says it removed the items:
    ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Other Deletions )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys.exe

But yet it is still in the HJT log. Let's see what happens when we try to remove it manually, and it may well be already gone?

    1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) Windows Defender
    Click on "Tools"
    Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
    Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your proection back on when you finish.

    4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSys2] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys2.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys2.exe <<< make sure that file is gone

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups\0003\DriverFiles\winsys2.exe <<< make sure that file is gone
(investigate the ReinstallBackups folder, look at properties, etc, see if it looks safe. Don't delete anything we need)

    6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    7) ATF-Cleaner if run according to the directions should have cleaned the Prefetch folder. To be sure, look here:
c:\windows\prefetch\WINSYS2.EXE <<< make sure that file is gone

Restart and post a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

    Thanks
