My computer is infected with malware - please help

Hello,

My computer is infected with malware. The following rogue security software has shown up on my computer:

-Ultimate defender (this was popping up and asking to install, but isn't anymore)
-Easy Spyware Cleaner
-Spy-Rid Remover
-InfeStop

I think that i got a trojan or virus of some sort around Dec 15-17 2007, because that's when i started noticing some problems (popups and internet explorer was really slow... i tried to run some windows updates and internet explorer 7.0 installed, and internet explorer stopped running...since then have been using mozilla firefox only...no popups, but computer/internet are slow)

Many things will not open (i.e. "add/remove software", date/clock, and now even the "control panel") and instead just give a message - "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator"

I read the "Before you Post" thread and tried to run the Kaspersky online scanner, but the link would not load (connection timed out because server was taking too long to respond). Also, could not run Spybot S&D because once the installation window pops up it closes automatically before i can even begin the installation process.

Yesterday I ran Ad-Aware 2007.

Important information: You have signs of a backdoor trojan and/or rootkit on your system (more info). These have the potential to harvest confidential data, and require special attention. Although rare, identity theft, or other fraudulent financial activity is a possibility. We generally have good success removing all signs of these infections. However, if you have adequate backups, required media (CDs), and the ability, at this point it would be wise to consider reformatting and reinstalling your operating system and applications. We can provide you with some helpful links if needed.

Before we proceed, we recommend that you temporarily disconnect the infected system from the Internet to protect yourself, and others. This is because these infections may use the Internet for remote access, or even remote control of an infected system. If you don’t have access to another system, and require Internet access, be sure to have a firewall installed. We recommend the free version of Comodo. Note: never run more than one firewall.

If you used the infected system for online banking, any online financial transactions (including eBay and Paypal), or access any sensitive information online, please use a known clean computer, and change your passwords as soon as possible. It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to let them know your account information and passwords may have been compromised. Closely monitor all bank and credit card statements. In the event you do notice suspicious activity, it's important you act quickly. Follow these steps recommended by the FTC: Defend: Recover From Identity Theft.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"

• Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
• (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
• DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.

• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
• Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next replyalong with a new HijackThis log.

Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:

I would like to reformat and reinstall the operating system. Could you provide some links or any information on how to do this.

Also, when backing up files from harddrive, is it okay to connect external harddrive and back up to it, or should i only use cds & flash, etc?

I would only save the information you truly require, the moment you connect another hardrive, or any other devices to your infected computer you risk comprising them, as well.

HERE is a website that will explictly explain how to do a clean install of Windows XP on your computer. When the option of formatting the hard disks occurs, definitely go ahead with that.
