k8l.info and random advertisements - HJT log

[Corporate_Raider]

For several months I have been trying to get rid of viruses and adware that keep appearing on my system. Random advertisements and programs play over my speakers even when I disable my internet connection. Internet Explorer shows I keep visiting lots of search sites like k8l.info, www.primosearch.com and abcsearch.com even though I am not doing so.

I have followed all of the instructions exactly (to my knowledge) for posting here. Here is my HJT log. I will post the Kaspersky log next since together they are too long for one message. Your help is greatly appreciated.

2) AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly ewido)
Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the multi-colored box emblazoned with an 'S' in the system tray.
In the 'Resident Shield' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware active protection 'off' by clicking 'Change state' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
If you are instructed to reboot at any time during your cleanup, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the Resident Shield".
Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

I followed your instructions and all of the adware issues I had are gone. No more references to k8l.info or any of the other bogus click fraud search sites. Thank you so much.

Comcast is my ISP so I did not make any adjustments to the startup process. However, I am wondering, when it says "file missing HKCU", can I delete those references? Also, I have removed all Symantec components I can using "add/remove programs", but I notice in the Hijack log it still has a reference in the last line to Symantec Core LC. How should I remove this item, or do I need to worry about it?

As for spyware removal programs, I used to have Symantec but it often caused my system to crash so I switched to McAfee. Should I now remove Kaspersky, spybot, and AVG Anti-Spyware? I am certainly disappointed that McAfee was supposed to be "watching over my system" and allowed all this chaos to happen. Nice protection. Thoughts???

HJT does have a few bugs and the (file missing) in 09 items is one of them. I would leave those alone if I were you unless you are positive after reading the tutorial that you want them gone. We have come to recognize, after years of using the tools, when this is an issue.

Symantec has a history of being hard to remove, one reason I do not suggest it. This is still running:

You can disaable it so it is not running like this:
Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Symantec Core LC and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Let's clean the infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a last Kaspersky Online Scan to be sure we got it all, please do not post a clean scan, just let me know.

I will post information in closing that should answer all questions you have asked, if it does not, please post them and I will do my best to give you answers.
