We had a hornet's nest in our barbeque a couple years back, that was an unpleasant surprise.

We saw a hornet's nest on a tree trunk that was bigger then the trunk itself. Wrapped totally around. they set it on fire

That was probably the hornet equivalent to a city.
As I recall, we just slammed the barbecue lid down and ran.
