I have an HP laptop running Vista Home Edition. My Yesterday, against my better judgment, I downloaded a zip file from an unknown source, which I think tried to install some malware on my laptop. After spending most of the day trying to remove it (possibly successfully), I've now got a black desktop wallpaper which for some reason I can't change. I think that this happened after I ran ComboFix (didn't realize at the time that novices like myself shouldn't run this). I can see all the destop thumbs in the "personalize" control panel but when I hit okay nothing happens (I don't have "solid color" selected). My original desktop wallpaper is displayed at the Windows log on screen, but as soon as I log on it turns to a black background. Everything else seems to work okay (I can see all my desktop icons).
Here's a history of what I did yesterday:
When I opened the downloaded zip file, Teatimer popped up indicating that a change to the registry was to be made (Startup iitem). I clicked "Deny" but the Teatimer window popped up again with the same message. I checked the "remember this change" box and hit "Deny" again. Teatimer went crazy with the registry change window popping up every couple of seconds. The same command (rundll32.exe c:\Windows\System32\xxxx.dll#1) was popping up except the "xxxxx" was changing each time to a different random letter combination. In the end I had to hit "accept" so that I could actually use my laptop.
I went into "msconfig" and looked at the Startup page and there it was ! Startup Item: MSServer; Command: rundll32.exe C:\Windows\system32\lfffh.dll#1; Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. I disabled this command and then deleted any permutations of this command from the registry.
I ran HJT and it picked up this rogue Startup command. After disabling Teatimer it eventually removed it. At somepoint during this I ran ComboFix, SuperAntiSpyware & Kaspersky online. Kaspersky picked up 2 viruses (log attached). It maybe picking up my SpectorPro monitoring & surveillance software. but I'm not sure. HJT doesn't appear to show the rogue command anymore (see attached log), however it is still showing as disabled in the MSconfig startup items, and I'm not sure how to remove it.
Hope someone can help.
Here is the latest HJT log (I also have copies of the logs from yesterday if any help)
