Make sure your version of Spybot is totally up to date and fully immunized.
I am running version 1.5.2.20 Latest detection update: 2008-04-09

If you are up to date, it may be a false positive, look here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=16
or post here for help from the Spybot experts:

(please be sure it is not you first, before you watse their time)

Why does Spybot-S&D flag changes in the Windows Security Center?

Hi pskelly,

I updated to use the same version and date as the one you mention. How do I determine if it is a false positive?

Should I reenable teatimer?

My Norton Antivirus is again turned off. How can I keep this turned on? I believe it was the trojan that turned this off but now it still keeps turning itself off. Do I have a problem still?

I am wondering if you can give me advice on what firewall and antivirus program to use. Currently I am using norton protection suite for firewall and antivirus. I am using S&D for spyware but forgot originally to immunize which is how I got into this mess.

Is AVG (the free version) better to use than nortons? Can you recommend a better firewall than nortons?

By the way, what am I supposed to do now?

Thanks again for all your help. Your volunteer work in helping others is very generous.

Yes, enable TeaTimer if you run it.

In my post #40, I included links with information from experts that should answer all of your questions if you will take the time to review them. Once you have done that, if you still have questions, post them and I will do my best to give you answers.

I run AVG Free myself, but I am not in the business of comparing programs, I personally offer only freeware. If you want comparisons, ask Google for help such as:

Hi pskelly,

I reenabled teatimer and also changed my firewall from Norton to on-line armour. I changed my AV program from Norton to Avira. Also I added spyware guard and spyware blaster.

The results...

I ran a full scan of Avira and it found 1 trojan called TR/Crpt.XPACK.Gen which I had it delete.

I also ran another full S&D scan and it continues to find the smitfraud.c trojan.

My computer worked well last night but today I am having difficulty connecting to my wireless. I am plugged in right now. I think maybe I denied some critical access needed by the computer to connect to the wireless router.

Also when I went into the firewall settings if I look at the allowed hosts it is full of all the nasty websites you would never want to access, with full access allowed to those sites. I think something is disabling the protection still.

Is there some kind of a new scan we can still run? I think I am still infected.

Result of reboot and rescan of S&D today.

No more Smitfraud.C reported. Are these tracking cookies bad and if they are how can I prevent them?

I just ran another Avira virus scan and it found the same Trojan as last time.

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled <<< this was covered in a post, I willl post the information again:

In my post #40 I gave you detailed instructions for cleaning your System Restore files, and I also included a link in the information for doing this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

This is the item your antivirus program is finding, it is a protected file and can only be removed by following the instructions I posted. Avira may try to delete it, but it cannot, and the item will continue to be identified until you clear your infected System Restore point.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{17913FD4-45AD-4887-AA5D-26A9E19EBD19}\RP4\A0000605.exe

Make sure you have viewing all files and folders enabled so you can see this file which has been renamed and is benign:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbXQiHBU.dll_old <<< navigate to that file and delete it.
Empty your Recycle Bin on the Desktop to clean it from there.

Disable TeaTimer, restart the computer

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat

That should remove the items from TT's memory, if the items (which are dead...not malware) appear again, then uninstall Spybot S&D completely, restart then go through those steps again. Then check the log to make sure they are gone. Then reinstall Spybot S&D and reactivate TT if you use it.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O21 - SSODL: VolumeRam - {205e4f97-849e-4a84-98eb-c1c1ac0c5bdc} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Would not hurt to run clean manager:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

Remember...when an item is an infected System Restore file it will start like this: C:\System Volume Information\_restore

Thanks

Hi pskelly,

I followed all of your instructions. I was not able to find the file with the _old ending (don't remember what it is called). Anyhow, I was successful in following all the rest of your instructions. I reinstalled S&D and online armour in order to clear things up.

A fresh scan using S&D was clean and so was the Avira scan.

I ran a HJT and there is no evidence of anything suspicious. I have included the log for you to check and hopefully tell me I am in the clear.

I would like to thank you again for all of your help. It is appreciated. I know I was not the easiest to help but I did try to follow your instructions the best I could.

I will donate to the cause for the very valuable service you guys are providing.

Thanks for the feedback, your HJT log run at 11:53:40 PM, on 4/14/2008 looks fine. This file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbXQiHBU.dll_old <<< has been renamed and as such is of no harm to you. It is likely it is there and if you wish to remove it, make sure you are viewing all files and folders and then ask Search Companion to locate it.
Start > Search > All files and folders > All or part of the file name: > enter cbXQiHBU.dll_old into the search box and click Search. Be patient, Search Companion has a lot of files to search through and it may take an hour, but if it is there SC will find it. All files and folders must be enabled: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Safe surfing...Phil
