Spybot freezes when correcting problems

@Zenobia, Greyfox. I personally use it with the default settings... I just find it useful to remove "stuff" all in one. Alright, I might as well not recommend it in the future.
@2tallbill, from how I see it. You can remove the tracks (cookies) easily, or via manually with your browser. Well, actually depends on what browsers you use.

I told spybot to fix selected problems (the red ones) and nothing happened it simply froze, so no dialog box popped up.

I had this same problem recently and fixed it, but I'm not sure how.
I did these three things.

First, I installed service pack 3. By itself, this did not help.

Second, I ran msconfig and removed all questionable items from my startup list. They included these: cftmon, iTunesHelper, msmgs, QTTask, hpgs2wnd, id53, jusched, Adobe Reader Speed Launch, and Device Detector 3.

Third, instead of choosing to fix problems right after the scan ended, I first pushed the Help button and then dismissed the help window. My guess is that it was step 2 and not this last step that was key.

Then, when I chose to fix the selected problems, they were all quickly fixed and all appeared well.

Another problem, however, cropped up. If I run Spybot and it doesn't find anything, it gives me the great big Congratulations check mark and then stops responding. Obviously, not a big problem.

Note: I use Zone Labs security suite. This caused me some trouble installing service pack 3, and may have something to do with Spybot not responding.

If it is the latest free trial of etrust pest patrol you downloaded,then the name it is installed under in add/remove programs seems to be CA Antispyware.

Try opening Spybot,clicking Mode,Advanced Mode,Settings,then Settings once again.Scroll down to Main Settings,then remove the checkmark from beside Display confirmation dialogs before doing critical changes,then try a scan and see if it freezes then.

How does Adaware SE scan and fix,all okay,or any problems with that?

When I try to update Adaware it shows: error retrieving update.
When I run a full scan it shows no problems.

I have looked in the control panel add/remove programs and there is no
file named CA Antispyware or even a close variation.

I made the changes to spybot and ran a scan. This time it showed none of
red items that were present before. I selected the grey items such as cache,
common dialogs, cookie, history and log. When I told spybot to remove them
it simply shows an hour glass forever. Previously it turned blank. So it still freezes but in a different manner.

I appreciate the help and will wait for your next suggestion.

2tallbill. Have you consider upgrading to AdAware 2007? This is a suggestion: Can you "test-drive" Revo Uninstaller? To clarify, it is a uninstaller program and it lists All the programs on your computer.

There was a person here awhile back that had some troubles with Spybot freezing when fixing problems or tracks.They found that it seemed to be something to do with the new antirootkit plugins or TCPIPaddress.dll.That thread is here:

I have no idea if that would be why your Spybot is freezing when fixing or not.I haven't noticed any other people here with fixing/freezing problems that seems to be connected to the antirootkit plugins for some reason,so if that is it,it doesn't seem to be a common problem.

Maybe could I have a look at your update downloads log?Open Spybot,click Mode,then Advanced Mode,then go to Tools,then View report,then click View Previous Report,scroll down to Update downloads.log,then rightclick the Update downloads.log and select Open.At the top click Edit,then Select All.Return to Edit,then select Copy,then Paste it here.I can see from that if you downloaded the antirootkit plugins or not.

I've updated SpyBot Search and Destroy to version 1.5.2 and since that time, once it finishes scanning for problems, it hangs. The icon in the upper left hand corner becomes the generic "Windows" icon and I have to "X" out until I get "Program Not Responding". I've tried downloading the update multiple times and downloaded from different geographical locations to no avail. What to do?

I use Windows XP, SP2 and Firefox. Prior to the update, it worked fine.

Welcome to the forum. For future reference it may have been better if you had started a new thread about your specific problem, rather than placing you post on the end of a thread about a slightly different problem, however:-

You indicated that in your situation Spybot is hanging "once it finishes the scan". If the scan has fully completed there should be a message on the left hand side of the status bar near the bottom of the screen with something like "0 Problems found (mm:ss). And if there were no problems found then there should be a Congratulations message in the main part of the screen. Could you indicate exactly what appears on the status bar, and what appears on the screen?

Did you remove the old version of Spybot completely before you installed 1.5.2 or did you install the new version over the top of the old one?

Do you clean out your temporary internet files, cookies etc on a regular basis and what antivirus software are you using?

Let's try this.This probably will not work,but you can try it and see.
Go to C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Plugins.Rightclick TCPIPAddress.dll,then select Copy.Paste it onto your desktop,and save it for a backup copy.Next,return to C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Plugins.Rightclick TCPIPAddress.dll,then select Rename,and rename it to TCPIPAddress.dll.old.Exit the Plugins folder,then rescan with Spybot,and see if Spybot freezes when fixing now.Please let me know how it goes,thanks.
