    Default system slow & unstable, infected?

    Hi, I hope am not making too many mistakes for this first post, but my pc is behaving erratically, and poorly. Am using Win Vista and have had noticeable problem for about 3 weeks. Currently running in safe mode. Have been using (updated) versions of Spybot S&D, Adaware2007, and Windows Defender, plus Computer Assoc. Antivirus program, on an ongoing basis for at least the past 12 months. Every time I reboot, CA antivirus reports that it has detected and removed 2 threats? (but these detections do not appear in the CA real-time log report?) HJT log file contents follow. I would be most grateful if any expert assistance can be provided:

    Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
    Scan saved at 7:50:41 PM, on 9/05/2008
    Platform: Windows Vista SP1 (WinNT 6.00.1905)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6001.18000)
    Boot mode: Safe mode with network support

    Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
    "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
    All advice given is taken at your own risk.
    Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

    I do not know if I can help or not, but for me to find out, please follow these directions.

    1) Read the directions posted above and pinned to the top of the forum.

    2) What are your other programs telling you?
    Spybot S&D, Adaware2007, and Windows Defender

    3) I need to know exactly what CA is finding and where it is located. Tell me what you are doing when it finds it, does it give you options to delete or quarantine what it finds?

    4) Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
    Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
    Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

    You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

    * The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    * Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    * Now click on Scan Settings
    * In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    * Standard
    * Scan Options:
    * Scan Archives
    * Scan Mail Bases
    * Click OK
    * Now under select a target to scan:
    * Select My Computer
    * This will program will start and scan your system.
    * The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    * Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
    * Save the file to your desktop.

    Then post it here.

    5) Post a HJT log that is run in normal mode.

    Thanks

    Default my problem has escalated

    Hi, thankyou very much for your help. Yes, have read the rules and I believe that I am following them carefully, as required.

    I am now unable to log on to the 'problem pc' at all as administrator, because the password no longer accepts - have tried in normal and safe mode. The 'infection' appears to be blocking me? For now, I can still log on as a 'standard user' on another account. I am now getting a bit desperate! (am using my old backup pc for now and hoping that nothing similar will happen here!). I assume that I have to log on as an administrator to be able to use the Kapersky online scanner?

    Regarding those questions, I didn't notice any problem regarding the other spyware scanners. Apart from a very slow and increasingly unstable system, each time I rebooted, and usually after a few minutes, CA Antivirus box appeared at the bottom of the screen informing me that it had detected two threats and had removed them. I could not find any reference to what threats it was referring to, because the report logs did not show them? However, there was an older entry in the CA Antivirus 'real-time log' which reads (in full) as follows: "16/04/2008 8:47:20 AM File infection: J:\svchvst.exe is Win32/Pipown.IB trojan. Deleted".

    What should I do next please?
    Thanks

    Since this is Vista and my knowledge is limited, I suggest you take the computer to a forum that will be more familiar with your operating system. Since I can not see the infection, if there is one, it may be purely a Vista problem, and can not run the tools, I believe this would be best. I would appreciate it if you post a link to the Vista forum you choose so I can watch the repair.

    My other thought would be since this is Vista, it may be a new computer that is still warrantied. This being the case, I would exercise that warranty, any repairs you attempt will likely invalidate it.

    Thanks

    Here are a couple of good forums dealing with the OS.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the suggestion. Sadly too late now as I was eventually unable to log on at all - it seems the same infection was denying access as my user passwords would not allow me, or other users, to logon? Anyway, I couldn't see any alternatives so I 'cut my losses' and have now reformatted and re-installed Vista. Only hope that others (and me) don't get caught by whatever that was (is).
    Cheers,
    Roger
