Default smitfraud[ctfmona.exe?]/winIfixer/"blue screen of death" & desktop bugs

Hello and thanks for this great support site:

BACKGROUND: I tried to view a video clip online yesterday and downloaded a bunch of problems! I ran full scans with Norton Antivirus and Windows Defender without success. Norton has kept alerting to problems with "WinIfixer" which I select to remove but it keeps comming back. I also have my desktop screen changed to the "Blue Screen of Death" [so I believe that it is called] along with bugs that eat up my desktop. I tried running Norton and Windows defender repeatedly in normal mode and safe mode as well as doing online scans at the Symantec site. I tried to follow online Symantec instructions [which had me disable System Restore...] but when I went to registry looking for WinIFixer, the lines of registry entry they said to delete were not there.

INTIAL SPYBOT SCAN: have followed your posted instructions prior to this my first post. First scan of SPYBOT found Smitfraud-C.gp, a couple other problems and a bunch of cookies. Below I copied all of the non-cookie listings from my first SPYBOT scan. I clicked to repair all of these and then moved on to the rest of your list of instructions:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I am not 100% postitive, but it looks like you removed the infection? If you are concerned by the 17 items KOS found, they are all safely quarantined with the exception of one infected System Restore file. You do have SR back on now, correct? Most of us do not agree with Symantec and believe a bad SR is better than no SR in an emergency. I do not want to run tools to remove something that is not there, so let's do this first.

    1) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\ <<< delete the contents of the folder in red.
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...00041213443506

    2) Empty the Recycle Bin on the Desktop, make sure it is empty.

    3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    4) Windows Defender: Click on "Tools"
    Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
    Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

    5) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(as soon as you are sure you are clean, enable TT again)

    5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

(you may get a couple of slow boots while Prefetch repopulates itself http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html )

    7) Clean infected System Restore files like this:
    Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Reboot

    Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new KOS to make sure you are clean. There is no need to post a clean scan result, just let me know. Let me know about any other malware issues that concern you at that point also.

    Thanks...Phil

Default making progress, but still have desk top bugs

Hello again - thanks for your assistance

I am not sure if all is now well... so I have followed your instructions:

    1. deleted all contents of quarantine folder
    2. emptied recycle bin
    3.downloaded ATF Cleaner
    4. unchecked "real time protection" in Windows Defender
    5. unchecked "Resident TeaTimer"
    5. Ran "system scan only" in Hijack this...checked required file and clicked on "fix checked"
    6. Ran ATF Cleaner
    7. Turned of System Restore, then rebooted compter, then turned back on System Restore
    8. Ran KOS with a CLEAN SCAN RESULT [no viruses or infected files]

So I guess this means I am now infection free?

I am still getting bugs (look like roaches) that keep eating my desktop like a screen saver....can't stand roaches and they are creeping me out [especially when they start eating people in my screensaver pictures] so I would appreciate if you could help me to get rid of them as well..

should I re-enable TeaTimer now? Do you recommend any other protective measures? I am really dissapointed that my Norton Antivirus and Windows Defender allowed my computer to get infected!! Do you recommend that I disable Windows Firewall while running Norton Antivirus? This has always bothered me but I think that Norton recommends this.

    Thanks again

    Scott

    Default forgot error message

Phil, I forgot that after I installed AFT Cleaner, I now get an error message upon startup:

Norton Antivirus 2006 Does not support the repair feature
    Please uninstall and reinstall

What does this mean? Do I need to reinstall NAV 2006 or AFT Cleaner?

    Any Suggestions?

    Thanks

    Scott

This may be tough, since the KOS scan is clean and nothing was showing in the HJT log except that one dead line.
What does this mean? Do I need to reinstall NAV 2006 or AFT Cleaner?
Since ATF-Cleaner is free, uninstall it first to see if the issue stops. I have installed a lot of ATF-Cleaners without an issue.

I am interested in any error messages, please post them word for word. You may want to contact Tech Support to see what they have to say, I do not use the product.
    http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp

Let's do some more investigating, post an uninstall list and the results of a MBAM scan.

    1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list
    )

    2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

    Thanks

    Default mbam found more problems!

Hello again...First let me say that You ROCK for volunteering your time to help one of the ignorant masses like me.

    1. Norton error message [still getting it on startup] here it is verbatim:

    "NORTON ANTIVIRUS 2006

Norton Antivirus 2006 does not support the repair feature. Please uninstall and reinstall"

I can not find ATF-Cleaner on my computer to uninstall...it is not showing on the uninstall window or in the program listing. The only place I see it is on the desktop which launches the .exe file. I plan to uninstall and reinstall my Norton Antivirus and then log on to update all files and definitions to see if this will resolve this error... any other suggestions will be welcome. I will let you know how this goes when I respond to your next post.

Norton Antivirus 2006 does not support the repair feature. Please uninstall and reinstall"
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search
If the answer is not there, all I can suggest is to contance tach support, I already provided a link.

ATF-Cleaner, I do not believe it has anything to do with the Norton/Symantec message, it is a nice free tool. If you wish to uninstall it, the directions were:
    Save it to your Desktop
It is a little trash can, just point at it, right click and choose delete.

    Thanks
