Default many zip files in Updates folder?

While trying to get to the bottom of the recent plague of false error messages concerning the error log and 'trojan include files', I discovered that I have many zip files in the Updates folder within Spybot. Is it okay that these files exist, or are they evidence of updates which have not loaded properly in the past?

P.S. I don't need any help with the false error messages. I have read and understand the various recent posts which deal with that topic.

    Hello,

    Those files are the updates.

    About the includes error:
You seem to be using a dated version of Spybot-S&D.
Please download our current version Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2. That should fix it.
You will find links to several download locations for this new version on our web site:
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Please search for new updates after installing Spybot-S&D 1.5.2.

    Best regards

Sorry I don't understand your answer about the updates. Are you saying that it is normal for all these zip files to be left over after applying updates over the years, or are you saying that these files are evidence of updates which did not get applied for some reason?

    Hal9001,

At any point in time, the zip files in the Updates folder contain the latest update for the particular catagory and normally these would have been applied. Not all catagories are updated at every dowload so the date of the files will vary. For comparison, I use the latest SpybotSD (1.5.2.20) on XP-Home, and currently there are 18 zip files, 2 ini files and 1 uiz file in this folder. The earliest zip file date is 25/7/2007 (clsid.zip)and the latest is 16/5/2008. As far as I am aware, when a catagory is updated, its zip file is replaced/overwritten so the number doesn't keep growing indefinately.

Your first post in this thread leads me to also believe you may not be using the current version 1.5.2.20. as was suggested by spybotsandra. If this is the case, when you do update to the current version, un-immunise first with your present version, then uninstall it and delete any residue before installing the new version. This will also ensure that there are no orphaned files left over.

The following link describes the recommended method of uninstalling Spybot
    http://www.spybot.info/en/howto/uninstall.html
I would also recommend running the clean up utility "this very small fix" available from the link in the uninstall instructions.

    Hope this helps

Hello. Sorry to push in. Greyfox, I would like to know... Say like a future version of Spybot-SD comes out in 2009, for example. It would be Spybot-SD 1.5.3. So as Spybot users, we have to un-immunize and uninstall Spybot 1.5.2? Do we have to run the registry fix mentioned in the link after uninstalling? Or can we just uninstall without un-immunizing and then install v. 1.5.3 just like that. Thank you.

    Hello,

You should unimmunize before uninstalling, otherwise you do not have that option of unblocking the blocked site in your browser.

And by the way...we are still developing version 1.5.3 aka 1.6.

    Best regards

    Wink The immunize zip files

Hi, Just to clarify a little.
For each "type" of immunize there will be an associated zip file, I had not yet immunized today's update, but my files are as follow:

    Directory of C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Updates

    clsid.zip---------------559,133 07-25-07 2:29p
    desc.english.zip--------269,036 05-14-08 8:22p
    fpfix.zip-----------------2,283 05-16-08 8:22p
    help.english.zip--------474,895 01-23-08 2:33p
    includes.zip------------539,419 05-21-08 1:08p
    includes.dialer.zip-----118,184 12-26-07 2:27p
    includes.pups.zip--------83,845 03-26-08 3:54p
    includes.keyloggers.zip--69,457 04-30-08 2:29p
    includes.security.zip-----8,174 01-09-08 2:30p
    includes.malware.zip----353,337 05-21-08 1:07p
    includes.spybots.zip----163,639 04-16-08 2:13p
    includes.hijackers.zip--149,544 04-30-08 2:28p
    includes.trojans.zip----484,474 05-21-08 1:07p
    plugchai.zip------------406,024 03-05-08 1:41p
    plugfennel.zip----------406,090 03-05-08 1:42p
    plugmate.zip------------347,637 03-05-08 1:42p
    supplemental.zip--------534,540 05-22-08 1:07p
    17 file(s) 4,969,711 bytes

As you can see, there will be no more files, they just increase on size
And remember, it is always better if you undo all the immunization before uninstall. Also it will be nice to copy your black list and your white list from Tea Timer (in case you have put something in there)
After that you can uninstall and reinstall
    Hope that will help
Today I will learn something (and tell others about...)
    -XP SP3 4Ghz 4Gb
    -XP SP3 2Ghz 768Mb
    -W98 SE 500Mhz 500Mb
All w/ZoneAlarm, Firefox, Spybot 1.6.2, Avast! 4.8 Home (Ex AVG 7.5)
