    Default virus win32/gaelicum.A

i am doing this for my son who cannot get online, every file is corrupt (so he says) there is a way to clean the system i know. what can he do?
i suggested since it will not allow him to get online anymore, that he take his laptop and download the program to clean the pc then run it from the cd/dvd on the infected pc. is this a viable solution?

Consider posting in the Malware Removal forum and having someone take a look at your system.

If you decide to have an experienced malware removal specialist assist you, please follow the procedure in this link to run scans and produce a HijackThis log:
    ---
However, have you run Spybot-SD on his computer? If so, did it find anything?

And where did your topic title come from?

Edit: So you're saying that your son's computer cannot access the internet?

If you have a flashdrive, you can download Hi-jack this on it. Execute it from your son's labtop and then save the results on the flash drive and post the results in the Malware Forums.

But first! Read the BEFORE YOU POST PROCEDURE. It should give you a clear idea of the instructions and what you should be doing.

    Default reg virus

my son formated both pc's the laptop and the desktop.
not sure if thats going to help if the virus is as malicious
as i heard. doesn't it effect all executable files?
i mean if he is careful with were he goes and what he does... thats kind of
scary. he refuses to install spybot sd to. ugh! he runs avg 7.8 i think.
i suggested 8.0 (upgrade) and possibly run windows defender. i told him there are allot of things to be careful about, hijackers etc. thank you so much for you input as well! i had read the prev post you directed me to, however with the severity of his infected pc's he could barely get it to boot into safe mode.
again thank you so much for your input!

You're welcome. An .EXE file can be considered both good and malicious. A trojan/virus/ and/or malware can be both lurking in a .EXE. Even if it seems legitimate, it may be dangerous. I would suggest practicing safe surfing. Download from trusted sites. P2P (LimeWire, uTorrent) are okay... just the programs itself. But it's what the contents that is download, you should be concerned about.

A clean format of the labtop should do much good, as long you backed up important data and documents. The latest version of AVG is 8.0 Free.

The AVG you are referring to is 7.5.524. There is no AVG 7.8 lols.

    Recommendations:
AV (Anti-virus) and Firewall. Use only one of each.

What I personally recommend is avast! anti-virus. Firewalls... good ones would be Comodo Pro and ZoneAlarm Free. I found the Pro version of ZoneAlarm to be tedious and complex... lols.

    Good luck.

Oh one more question. How did your son's labtop get "infected"? Spybot is AS (anti-spyware) tool. It will be up to user decision whether to run it or not.
