Default Trying to help a friend

Hello, I am not a great expert on PCs, but I can muddle through with directions. (I used to fix large mainframes when they were in vogue) I am trying to help a very elderly friend, whose computer has been infected with Virtumonde. I registered on this forum from my computer and E-mail address. I see that removing this virus can be difficult. So, my initial question is should I be working on this from his apartment and his E-mail address?
Second question is: He is pushing me to reinstall Micorsoft SP instead, but I am very leary of doing that. Somenone gave him the computer he has and he does not have the codes for XP and if I put in the CD he has, I get a message that the present XP on the computer is a higher level. He does not have the financial resources to by a new operating system.

What do you suggest, I should do?

    Thanks, Andy

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hi Andy, nice of you to try to help. Can he validate his copy of Windows and receive Windows Updates?

If it is a valid copy, I can tell you Vundo is not easy but I have cleaned a lot of it over the years. You make the call, a three way repair is going to be much harder on you than a two way. I'll work with you either way.
If you decide to proceed, read the directions posted above and pinned (sticky) at the top of the forum and post:
    Provide:
    a) The HJT log.
    b) The Kaspersky log report.

    Thanks...Phil

    Hi Phil,

thanks for your offer to help. I will be working from my friends computer as time allows, but will always try to reply within the 5 day period. I am having surgery tomorrow, but should be ok in 2-3 days, so I can gether the logs you requested.

OK Andy, I'll work with you, just keep me posted if you will be away an extended period of time. I should also say Vundo usually comes with a downloader trojan so the computer should be kept offline except when you are troubleshooting. There is a good chance the trojan will download more junk otherwise.

    Thanks...Phil

    Default update

    hi Phil,

Below is the Spybot log. I tried to run Kaspersky and it kept hanging up and than Internet Explorer failed.

When I tried to send this update with the SPYBOT LOG, I got a message that the text is too long. What do I do now?

    Thanks, Andy

Have you read the "Before you Post" instructions? If so, post the HJT log for starters:

Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

    Thanks

    Default HJT File

    Hi Phil,

Sorry for the mix up. I did read the Before you post stuff, but the way this computer keeps acting up, I did not follow through. Below is the HJT file.

The Kaspersky scan keeps hanging up at exactly the same place. I tried it 3 times.

    Thanks, Andy

Ok, thanks for the feedback, this is a vundo infection and they can be tough to remove. We will run the Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) later to make sure you are clean.

This tool will give you some relief, but you must follow the directions exactly as with all of these instructions.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.
