    Default Running out of options

Got nailed w/ vcodec last week and have been having problems ever since. Every time I think I've gotten rid of it (by using a combination of spybot and Spyware Nuker, both run with Windows in safe mode., but a couple of days later, it's back.

Today, we had a new development, which may or may not be related. A spyware program called SpywareQuake appeared today. I think my wife may have installed it. Here's the thing: I can't get rid of it. I uninstall it, but when I reboot, it reinstalls itself. I smell a rat.

In any event, I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Here's a HijackThis scan; if you need additional logs, just let me know.

Let me provide some additional information. It appears that the "front end" of the spyware is on my computer. It periodically attempts to download additional programs (mssearchnet.exe, nvctrl, a few others), but McAfee immediately catches them.

I attempted to use a removal process listed here:Removed link to 2-spyware. No luck.

There was also a process listed on this site. Every time Ewido started to load, my system rebooted. I had to uninstall Ewido.

The infection is on my home PC; naturally, I am at work now. If someone can provide real-time help some evening this week, please let me know.

    Hi jthomas666,

Please print these instructions, or copy them to Notepad and save them to your Desktop so you can refer to them easily. You will be in Safemode for part of this fix, so you will not have internet access.

    Download
smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Alternate links if that one is not working:
    smitRem.exe
    smitRem.exe

Double-click on the SmitRem.exe file. You will now see a screen.
Click on the Start button and the program will start extracting the files into a folder on your desktop called SmitRem. When it is finished, click on the OK button. If you look on your desktop you will now see a folder called SmitRem.. Do not run it yet. We will do this later in Safmode.

Download FixSQ.zip to your desktop and unzip it. Now double click on the FixSQ.reg file.
When it asks if you would like to merge the information, press the Yes button and then the OK button.

Then make sure you have the latest updates of Spybot S&D.

Next, please reboot your computer into Safemode by doing the following:
    Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safemode.

Perform the following steps in Safemode:

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall SpywareQuake if it is there. Do not restart your computer if it asks you to do so.

Run HijackThis and press "Scan". When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CC15449D-564B-BFBD-010F-5C0D90856CC3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EA8D55E4-50DB-BF83-81A8-FC5C2FA41AE7} - blank (file missing)

    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)

    O16 - DPF: {3E68E405-C6DE-49FF-83AE-41EE9F4C36CE} -
    O16 - DPF: {9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F} -

    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0013-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.3.1_02) -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.4.0_01) -

After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."
Close HijackThis. Make sure to allow the changes when TeaTimer prompts you about them.

Then search for and DELETE the specified file(s)/folder(s) IF PRESENT:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\stickrep.dll <--file

    C:\Program Files\SpywareQuake <--folder

Double-click on SmitRem's RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
When the tool starts you will see a series of screens with information on them. Read each screen, and when you are finished reading it, simply press any key on your keyboard. After reading the various screens that appear, the program will start the removal process.

If there is an uninstaller present for an infection that SmitRem removes it will start this uninstaller.

Simply click on the Uninstall button and allow the uninstaller to finish. When it is completed, it will close automatically and SmitRem will prompt you to continue. Now you should press any key to continue.

When no more uninstallers can be found, the tool will continue. Your desktop will disappear and you will start seeing text scroll across the screen. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about. When SmitRem has finished running it will automatically start the Disk Cleanup program.

This program will remove all Temp, Temporary Internet Files, and empty your Recycle Bin in order to remove any leftover files installed by this infection. This process can take up to a few hours depending on your computer, so please be patient. When it is complete, it will close automatically and you will be back at your desktop.

When the tool is finished, it will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or the partition where your operating system is installed. Examining that log should show that the infection was cleaned. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run a full system scan with Spybot S&D

    * Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" or "Desktop Uninstall" if present.

    * Reboot into Normal mode.

Please do an online virus scan with Panda ActiveScan Here. You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
    • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
    • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
    • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
    • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
    • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
    • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
    • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
    • Please post that report in your next reply. Simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also, please include a fresh HJT log, your Ewido report, and your Smitrem log (which resides here: C:\smitfiles.txt.)

OK, it appears that the operation was a success.

I ended up going through the process twice, though--after the first time, it appeared that there were still some traces hanging aroung (an extended periof of internet access as Windows finished booting up.

The PandaScan detected quite a few additional infections; please advise.

    Here are the various logs:

Panda scan log is too large to post (almost 80000 characters). If you'll give me an email address, I'll zip it up and mail it to you.

    Hi Jim,

    Got your log.

    You should delete these files:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dfrgsrv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\gdnUS2296.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\?hkdsk.exe

The last one will probably look like it is named chkdsk.exe
But you will notice there are two of those in the System32 folder
The real one will show under Properties it is a MicroSoft file.

    Then do the following:
    Updating Java and Clearing Cache
    1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
    2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
    3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
    4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
    5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
    6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      • Downloaded Applets
        Downloaded Applications
        Other Files
    7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
