?Suspected Infection. Help!

Hi,

Recently, I have noticed my computer becoming slower. My internet speed when surfing the net on my PC has also dropped markedly. When I download a file from the Internet, the download starts OK but then suddenly stops somewhere in the middle. When I open my browser, the homepage fails to load at first (giving a timeout error) - I have to refresh to get it loading. In addition, I am not able to sign in to my Windows Live Messenger - the error message saying that there are some internet connection problems (key ports).

I do not remember changing any settings on my computer before all these started happening. I have checked my Internet settings and all are the same as before. When I use another laptop to access my house's internet connection, internet is fine - I guess this shows that its not an Internet connection problem.

I managed to download Spybot, but on installing, I can't get it to download the updates - the download starts, but stops after a while. I used the un-updated version to scan and it picked up "FunWebProducts" and "MyWay.MyWebSearch" which was supposedly cleared. That did not help.

I see some adware, we can clean it but Spybot should clean what it finds for you but you should have the newest version and be fully updated and immunized.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice and sorry for the late reply. I have followed all your steps. But the computer and the Internet download speeds still seem to be slow (browser time-outs keep on happening, Windows Live Messenger unable to connect to internet supposedly due to "key port problems", download frequently gets stuck at certain points). Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. While MBAM and HJT do not scan all areas, you need to know the are both scanning clean and your issues is likely not a malware problem. The first thing you need to know is that error messages are needed complete and word for word. This is the only way they can be researched.

Thanks for replying and the websites given. Good to know that my computer seems clean of malware. But I'm still unsure on how to solve the problem.

It seems unlikely that it is a particular browser issue as both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer have that problem. As for a error message, there is no error message regarding the browsers. What happened was, when I download a file or when loading some websites (especially those with lots of pictures) - the download starts as normal, and then after a while, it stops progressing (the % download stays the same) - and then after about 5 mins or so, the download progress continues, eventually getting stuck again somewhere and the same thing happens again.

Regarding Windows Live Messenger, the error message showed Error code: 81000306. "We are unable to sign you in to Windows Live MEssenger, possibly because of a problem with the servie or with your internet connection. Please make sure you are connected to the Internet". The Windows Live Messenger Troubleshooter showed an exclaimation mark beside Key Ports and said "Failed to connect to the service. THis could be due to improper proxy or firewall settings". I checked, I couldn't see any changes in my proxy or Windows Firewall settings.

I also do not think that its my internet service provider that's the problem because all is OK when I use my friend's laptop to connect to the Internet here.

Sorry about the long post. Do you think there could be some problem with my Internet connection settings? I'm not sure.

I keep seeing references to the firewall, if you are running the Windows firewall, try turning it off for a few moments to see it is blocking you.

My feeling is the best place to ask for help is Microsoft which is why I posted the support link. You can email or chat in realtime about the issue and usually get help within a few days.

Do not rule out your ISP...they take our $$$ and when we have an issue want to blame anyone else when the technical folks have jobs that are to help us with issues. They can help troubleshooting problems if they want to.
