    Go to Start > Run
    Type regedit and click OK.

    • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
    • Go up to "File > Export"
      • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
      • Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      • Under "Filename" put backup
    • Choose to save it to C:\ or in somewhere else safe location so that you will remember where you put it (don't put it on the Desktop!)
    • Click Save and then go to File > Exit.

Open Notepad and copy the contents of the following box to a new file.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_USERS\PE_C_CHERYL RICHARDS\Control Panel\International]
    "sTimeFormat"="HH:mm:ss"

    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-769079328-2221179514-3766738458-1011\Control Panel\International]
    "sTimeFormat"="HH:mm:ss"
Save it as fix.reg (save type: "All files" (*.*)) to your desktop.

It should look like this ->

Go to Desktop, double-click fix.reg and merge the infomation with the registry.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

    Reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log taken in normal mode.

    Default ran spybot

this is a business partner's computer; i'll keep my mouth shut the next time someone has a compt problem - but of course suggest they come to this site
(more work than i barginned for!!)

i ran spybot on his, his wife's (cheryl), and his son's log-in.
    came across the following:
    virtumonde (our old friend)
    zango
    smithfraud
    registryoptimizer
    minibug
    webhancer

rebooted and have been trying to uninstall Mcafee (unsuccessful, hopefully can after this is all taken care of and then reinstall it - Julian had 2 virus softwares on his comp and both were turned off)

below is a fresh hjt for you, what is the next step (you are doing a great job)

    Default

In that case, please post a HijackThis log taken in normal mode from every user account

For desktop thing, you should be able to change it via Control Panel (if you can access it).

    For Cheryl:

Fixing this might stop this - "common folder and system 32 folder pop up upon logging in"

    This might also help.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [] c:\WINDOWS\System32\

Usually it is a sign that there are some startup entries which don't have anymore corresponding files.

So check that for every O4 entry there is a file, too.

    For Ian:

    This needs to go:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [hotac] C:\WINDOWS\system32\laihbp.exe reg_run

    Do this on admin account:

    start - run
Type sc stop WMIPerAddOn and click ok
then sc delete WMIPerAddOn and click ok

    Post back fresh logs.

    Default fyi

i tried to go look in chryl's account again and a message came up this time saying "cannot find local profile...."

when it did open, the computer started acting like it was creating a new user - setting up personal settings, etc.

her desktop had dell picture (not her personal one)

don't think that was supposed to happen - it seemed stuck so i logged off through task manager

just saw your reply and acting on it now
