Default Problems with Karina.dt and other odd recurring issues

    Hello,
My computer has been infected for the last two days and, honestly, I'm still not 100% sure what's going on with it. I've tried cleaning it in safe mode multiple times with multiple programs (spybot, McAfee, AVG, Stinger, Windows Defender, all of them up to date). Every time I switch out of safe mode however, all the infections and malware seem to come right back within a matter of a few minutes. Last night I believe I was able to eliminate just about everything but Karina.dt (found at Windows\system32\Karina.dt), but everytime I deleted it or attempted to remove it using McAfee, it would reappear instantly. Since I honestly can't think of how to fix things, I figured I'd see what people had to say here.

These entries popped up in my most recent spybot scan:
    Adrevolver
    BurstMedia
    Delf.Spool.cn
    DoubleClick
    FastClick
    MediaPlex
    Virantix
    WebTrends live
Win32.Mutant.yf (2 entries, one in registry, one a file named Winctrl32.dll)
    Zedo

In particular I know Virnatix, Delf.Spool.cn, and Win32.Mutant.yf have all been removed by spybot multiple times.

MY HJT log is as follows:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

    • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
    • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible.
Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

    1 - SDFix

    • Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

2 - Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.

    3 - Run SDFix

    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

    4 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
    • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

5 - download and run RSIT

    • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

    6 - Status Check
    Please reply with

    1. the SDFix.Report.txt (C:\SDFix\report.txt)
    1.the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)
    2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
description of any problems you are having with your PC

    Thanks peku006
I don't help with logs thru PM. If you have problems create a thread in the forum, please.

Upon rebooting out of safe mode, I twice encountered the windows error message: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needed to close"

Otherwise things appear to be running well enough at current, AVG has stopped popping up with alerts every two minutes and google links produced by google searches are no longer automatically redirected to various random addresses (an odd symptom I encountered a few times earlier). Karina.dat appears to have vanished as well (thank god). I'd still like to run another scan with spybot and AVG before I feel I can safely say my computer is clean, but I'd prefer to do that tomorrow, given the time and the fact that I've been working on this thing for the last 4-5 hours. Anyhow, thanks for everything thus far! At the very least I'm glad to know Karina has finally died...

    Hi Demonicadverse

No action taken. on your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log. You need to run it again and make sure it removes selected.

1 - Remove bad HijackThis entries
    • Run HijackThis
    • Click on the Scan button
    • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      • Unknown
        O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\karina.dat

    • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
    • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
    • When completed, close the application.

    2 - Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

    Double-click on Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon

    On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:
    • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • The log can also be found here:

      C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

    4 - Status Check
    Please reply with

    1. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
    2. a fresh HijackThis log

    Thanks peku006

I actually did remove the items that MBAM flagged, for whatever reason the log does not appear to reflect this. The entries you asked me to delete from hijackthis also appear to be absent from the list now. My latest run of MBAM flagged nothing and my HJT log is as follows:

    Hi Demonicadverse
You’ve done a good job so far.......
Logs, looks good but let's run one online scan to be sure

    1 - Clean temp files

    • Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

      Under Main choose:
      • Windows Temp
        Current User Temp
        All Users Temp
        Temporary Internet Files
        Prefetch
        Java Cache

        *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

      if you use Firefox:
      • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
        Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

      if you use Opera:
      • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
        Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

    2 - F-Secure Online Scan

Lets run an F-Secure online scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
    Go to http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

    Notes:
This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
You must have administrator rights to run this scan
This scan can take several hours, so please be patient

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
    Click Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

    3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

    4 - Status Check
    Please reply with

    1. the F-Secure online scanner report
    2. a fresh HijackThis log

    Thanks peku006
