Another case of virtumonde

I recently downloaded version 1.6.0 of Spybot and ran it. It took much longer than the previous version with tons of references to virtumonde(.dll, .sci, .sdn).
I was going to post a query but did a search on virtumonde in the forum and found lots of other users were having the same problem. So I downloaded hijack_this and ran it. A copy of the output follows. Is there anything else that I need to do?

My system is a Dell Dimension E310 with a P4 processor and Windows XP with SP3. I use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird when on the Internet.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Hi George, you must have missed the directions pinned (sticky) to the top of the forum and I posted them above, because HJT is not located correctly. I can not see this infection and it is likely because you are running System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) in Selective Startup mode. Return to Normal mode until we finish.

To recap:

1) Return MSConfig to Normal mode

2) Describe symptoms of this infection

3) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi Phil,

I changed to normal mode.
The symptom is that when I run the new version of Spybot
it runs twice as long as the previous version and it shows
references to virtumonde.* for about half of the scan. In the
previous version I don't remember seeing any references to
virtumonde.

Thanks for posting a new HJT log and let me first say that even though Spybot S&D can not yet remove Vundo (no one program I know can remove this nasty adware that I know of) Vundo has been in the database for quite a while. Vundo is often hidden and we will take a look, but you aslo need to know this is the malware removal form and questions about Spybot S&D should be posted here:

Since you are having problems, you could have gotten a bad or corrupt download, I suggest you uninstall it completely and download it fresh from the link I posted.

The only thing I see in the HJT log is this:

What the hackers have learned to do is infect folks with exploits when they visit infected websites and they use out of date progems like Java, Adobe and others to do this. You say I don't go to infected websaites...see this information: Infected websites are the next internet security threats

Once the sites are hacked, they are taken down as soon as the sites are aware but untold folks are infected before that happens.

Let's have MBAM take a first look for any malware.

Read and follow the directions carefully:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Per your instructions, I
1. uninstalled Spybot and reinstalled 1.6.0 from www.safer-networking.org/en
2. turned off Tea Timer.
3. rescanned and got many references to virtumonde as before.
4. unstalled Java and installed version 6, update 7.
5. downloaded and installed Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware.
6. ran a Full Scan.
7. results follow and don't look too bad.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, MBAM is also a tool that targets Vundo files and you can see what it reported, you did update MBAM before running it?

Before we start dragging out big hammers, let's take a look at Spybot S&D which is the program reporting the Vundo that MBAM is not finding.

I understand Spybot S&D is finding Vundo and when you installed the program it was updated and immunized. I also understand that you ran Spybot S&D as directed in the "Before you Post" instructions.
All of this being true, I would like to look at a report from Spybot before we involve Spybot S&D experts.

Check for updates, run a scan, fix any problems then:
on the toolbar menu select mode and switch to advanced, on the left select tools, view report, make sure all the options are selected near the bottom except:
Uncheck[ ] do not report disabled or known legitimate Items,
uncheck[ ] Include a list of services in report.
Uncheck[ ] Include uninstall list in report.
Now select near top-- view report, Press export, and save the log somewhere so you can find it. post the saved log in your next reply.

Post a new HJT log with that.

Hi Phil,
I think I led you astray after reading your last post and my original post. Sorry.
When I said that there were many references to virtumonde it was those that appeared during the running of SpyBot in the lower left hand corner of the screen. The last count that appeared was 287542 and about half of them were attributed to virtumonde(.dll, .sci., .scn). This didn't happen with the previous version of SpyBot; the total count then was about 130,000 and SpyBot finished in about half the time it takes now. I couldn't image why one virus would consume so much of SpyBot's time. None of the other viruses appeared a fraction of the time as those for virtumonde. The only problem that SpyBot has been reporting is "Microsoft Windows Security Center - disabled".
If I'm missing the mark please let me know and I will follow through with your last post.

Hi George, thanks for the feedback, to be sure we are on the same page I checked my version of Spybot S&D which is 1.6.0.30 Latest detection update is 2008-09-24.
Keep in mind the items in the lower left corner of the interface you see are the items in the database that Spybot scans your computer to look for. The are in alphabetical order so virtumonde comes late in the scan. Since hackers can name their junk anything they wish, it may be there are a lot of those files. I am scanning now to look. I can report that the data base on my version is showing 287542 and yes, I remember earlier versions had a smaller database.

I couldn't image why one virus would consume so much of SpyBot's time.

Technically, this junk is adware and it is by far infecting more computers than any other ,alware, my unedicated guess would be that about 75% of the infected computers are infected by this junk.
